Sergej Postupalsky

SAUK PRAIRIE-Sergej Postupalsky, age 83, of Prairie du Sac, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in Sauk Prairie. He was born on October 4, 1934 in Litomysl, Czechoslovakia, the son of Nikolai and Marta (Zastera) Postupalsky. Sergej immigrated to the United States when he was 17. Following his education at Wayne State University, University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin, Sergej began a lifelong Bald Eagle and Osprey monitoring program in Michigan that he continued for over 55 years. His extensive outreach work included lectures, presentations, interviews and papers to raise public awareness. Sergej was equally generous with his expertise to students, colleagues, and fellow birders. His meticulous research records supported efforts to ban pesticides and protect habitats and contributed to the successful restoration of both species, which he considered his greatest professional achievement. Sergej was an avid stamp collector, a fan of opera, a passionate environmentalist, and enjoyed conversation on a wide range of topics in seven languages. Sergej is survived by his daughter, Catherine Stoll; his former spouse and good friend, Susan Stoll. His ashes will be scattered over Lake Superior near his research area.
