MADISON/SPRING GREEN – Robert B. Burns, age 89, of Madison and most recently Spring Green, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the William S. Middleton Memorial VA Hospital. He was born on July 31, 1926, in Madison, the son of Burton and Clara (Mahlke) Burns. Bob was united in marriage with Barbara J. Smith on March 3, 1951, in Madison. He was a lifelong resident of Madison. Bob served his country in World War II with the United States Army. He was employed as a Fireman with the City of Madison for over 24 years and later as a crossing guard at the intersection of Gammon Road and Mineral Point Road. In his lifetime, Bob was the ultimate sportsman. He played football, basketball and ran track at Madison East High School and was a member of the Madison Fire Department baseball team which had numerous memorable games versus the Madison Police Department. As a junior at Madison East High School, he set, at the time, a state record in the mile run. Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara; sons, Robert (Suzanne) Burns and David (Danielle) Burns; grandchildren, Heather (Justin) Stapleton, Heidi (Chris) Bauer, Bret Burns, Suzi Burns, Rachel Burns, Rebecca (Matt) Davis and Clayton Burns; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Baylin, Madelyn, Ava and Alana; sister, Marilyn Callen; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Elaine, June and Helen. A service celebrating his life will be held at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 237 Daley St., Spring Green, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 9, 2016. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Honoring his service to his country he will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park in Monona, with full military honors. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Dear Bob,
Please accept my sympathy in the loss of your dad. It appears, that he lived, a long and good life, for that you can be thankful.. My husband, Wayne, went to school with your dad, and said, when he saw this picture., that he looked older, but the same as he remembered him from East High School.
I see, by the obituary, that your family has grown a great deal, since our days of working together at CUNA Mutual..
