Obituary

MONONA–Kathleen Ann Mahoney, age 72, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016. She was born on July 21, 1943, in St. Paul, Minn., the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Albrecht. Kathy graduated from St. Agnes High School in 1961 where she met her future husband, Michael. They married on Aug. 10, 1963, at St. Agnes Catholic Church and moved to Madison/Monona in July 1965. This is where they raised their three children Patrick, Barbara, and Jeffrey and became parishioners at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. They became members of the 5:00 Mass Folk Group because having fun as well as having a strong faith was an integral part of Kathy's life. An honors graduate from Madison College's Clothing and Textiles Program, Kathy, already an accomplished seamstress, began her long career as an instructor in the college's Adult Enrichment Program where she touched the lives of her students. After their retirement, Mike and Kathy continued to nurture her love for the outdoors and adventure by traveling extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. She had many other interests as well. An avid gardener, Kathy was a charter member of the Monona Ladies Improvement Society caring for the Winnequah Park Gazebo and the Lucky "13" Golf League digging divots at Door Creek Golf Course. Kathy also enjoyed getting together with the WOGs, Needle Droppers, and her book club. The annual family vacation at Northern Bay was a highlight of her year. Kathy was a lover of all things but her greatest joy was her family. The love she poured out to her husband, Michael; sons, Patrick (Kellie) and Jeffrey (Valerie); daughter, Barbara (Scott Nyenhuis); grandchildren, Benjamin (Brittany), Joel (Valorie), Sarah (Alex) Nyenhuis, Heidi, Kayla, Morgan, and Kyler Mahoney; great-grandchildren, Avery and Gregory Nyenhuis; sisters, Barb (Ron) Fisher and Patricia (Pete) Thienes; sisters-in-law, Mary Mahoney, Sheila (Lanny) Johnson, and Marsha (Russ) Williams; mother-in-law, Virginia Mahoney; and many nieces and nephews was unlimited. She was preceded in death by her parents; and father-in-law, William Mahoney. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, at 11:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016, with Father John Silva presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, and at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church flower fund or St. Vincent DePaul Society. Our family can't thank the amazing staff at Wildwood Clinic, St. Mary's Medical Center, and Agrace HospiceCare enough for the compassionate care that they provided. To her family and friends, all Kathy asked is that you remember her as loving you. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Heartfelt sympathies to the Mahoney family. We had the pleasure of knowing Kathy for the last few years. Our memories are of a very kind and sweet lady that generously offered to be a "stand-in" grandma to our daughter after the loss of her grandma. Kathy always seemed to have a smile on her face and a kind word when we saw her. It was apparent she loved her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. She will be missed by all. Cindy & Roger Bong

To Mike and family, Joan and I were deeply saddened to learn about Kathy's death. The last several years we only seemed to just bump into each other, but we remember so well the earlier years at IHM, camping and get togethers . Joan was so happy that she and group of Kathy's IHM friends were able to meet for lunch just before Christmas. Our prayer for all of you is that God provides some help in copping with of this and at some point you find peace. Sincerely and with sympathy Joan and Ken Norton

Mike, Deepest condolences to you and your family from Lori, Logan and I. Kathy was one of the kindest people we had a chance to know in our lives, and a great God Mother to me. She always had a tremendous amount of time for others including including her own family, and extended family and friends. Her kind smile and caring personality will be deeply missed, and will never be replaced. Kathy, now that you have gone to a peaceful place in heaven please say hi to Carolyn on behalf of our family, and I am sure you to are having great time's together reminiscing and watching down over us. Mike, if there is ever anything you need please don't be hesitant to give us a call. Our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family and friends! Much love, Randy, Lori and Logan Buchman
