Obituary

MADISON – Vera Lizbeth Lee, age 95, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at St. Mary's Care Center. Vera was born on April 6, 1920, in Madison, to parents, Sidney L. Lee and Cora Ausse. Vera was a much loved and doted on only child. Her parents were older at the time of her birth and Vera said her father had already sold his businesses, so this left plenty of time for them to spend together. She recalled seeing her father fish in Lake Mendota behind their house, spending summers at their cabin on Lake Kegonsa and learning photography from her father. Vera had a close relationship with her mother also. The family spent summers traveling together in the U.S. and Vera's aunt, Georgia, would join them. She graduated from Central High School in 1938 and was already interested in the biological sciences and was an accomplished musician, playing the violin and trumpet. After graduation, she was asked to join the all-male big band led by Horace Heidt. She ultimately declined the invitation and went to UW-Madison to study to become a biology teacher. Vera taught in Columbus, Janesville and then spent the majority of her career teaching at Madison East High School. While still teaching full time, she spent many years caring for her father, mother and aunt as their health declined. After teaching for many years, Vera retired in 1983. She traveled nationally and throughout Europe. Vera especially enjoyed the fiords in Norway. She kept up with friends and family throughout her travels by writing letters, dinners and at the holidays. Vera was close to relatives on the Ausse and Halvorson side, especially the Orlin, Lee and Patricia families. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her aunt, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at ST MARY'S CARE CENTER CHAPEL, 3401 Maple Grove Rd., Madison, at 1 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016. A private burial will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dane County Humane Society or Olbrich Gardens. I had Ms. Lee for Biology. She was an incredible teacher. Her sense of humor was ever present. I remember her tossing worms and other icky things at us to get us introduced the specimen. I have always admired strong women. Ms. Lee was that and so much more. I truly admired Ms. Lee. She was way ahead of her time when she taught our class about DNA and Genetics back in the 80's. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. May she be off exploring the galaxies.
