Obituary
MADISON-Shirley M. (Kellogg) Steinbach of Madison, passed on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Agrace HospiceCare, at the age of 79. Shirley was born at home in the hot summer of 1936 in Mount Horeb, the daughter of Elvira M. (Cutler) and Kenneth H. Kellogg. Shirley has two siblings, brothers Kenneth and Ronald. Many of Shirley's early years were impacted by activities on the home front during WWII. Her parents gave a gift to the family to experience the culture and nature of the U.S. by organizing long adventure driven car trips. In 1946 the family explored the western states of the U. S. for one month. It was a time of "opening the windows" to learning and nurturing a passion for travel which for Shirley lasted a lifetime and provided for her and her husband and sons a bond of togetherness and the sharing of great memories.
Shirley graduated from Mount Horeb Union Free High School in 1954. She then earned a B.S. degree in the college of Liberal Arts and Education at the University of Wisconsin Platteville. It was there she met her future husband. Shirley married William J. "Bill" Steinbach December 28, 1957. They were lovingly married for 55 years. She and Bill made Madison their home where they raised two sons, James and Jonathan. Shirley's love and energy was centered on her family. She thoroughly enjoyed participating in the many youth activities of her children. She treasured watching their journey to become the successful and caring adults they are today. She also shared the same love for her two grandchildren, Zachary and Brittany.
Shirley was an elementary classroom educator for the Madison Metropolitan School District at Schenk and Glenn W. Stephens Elementary Schools for 30 years. She was a beloved and effective teacher who always worked to find the best level of intellectual challenge for each student. She developed creative curriculum which she facilitated with zest to engage, encourage, and inspire children to believe in who they are and who they want to become for a lifetime of successful opportunities. During these years, Shirley was awarded these and other honors...MMSD Elementary Teacher of the Year 1980-1981, DAR State of WI I.S. History Teacher of the year 1984-1985, MMSD Peer Nomination of the Golden Apple Award 1993-1994.
Following her retirement from the classroom, Shirley was on the staff of WisTEP of the U.W, Madison campus for 12 years where she and others developed and facilitated Graduate Level Science summer courses for classroom science teachers.
Shirley was an active participant in the Madison Community for many years...a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Middleton, the Madison Civics Club, Metropolitan Woman's Club, Friends of the Middleton Library, and her educator's sorority Alpha Delta Kappa, Iota Chapter where she served as president and chaired many committees. She enjoyed the Pooh Corner Book group friends and the monthly book discussions. She was fond of cooking and creating special foods and entertaining in her home. Shirley and Bill were U.W. Men's Basketball fans holding season tickets from 1962 to the present. They continued to be avid travelers touring Europe, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, the Hawaiian Islands, and mainland U.S.
Shirley is survived by her beloved sons James, wife Janette, grandson Zachary, Jonathan, wife Annette, granddaughter Brittany, brothers Ken, wife Linda, niece Penny, husband Chris, great nephew Logan, Ron wife Bonny, niece Lezlee, husband Tom, great nephew Jacob, wife Maggie, nephew Douglas wife Dana, great nephew Clayton, other relatives and forever friends many of them being lifelong friendships. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and her parents, Elvira and Kenneth.
Shirley was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother who will be deeply missed by all who knew and enjoyed her company. Shirley would tell you how much she enjoyed her time with you...she would remember some great adventure or laugh you shared...and would thank you for your time together.
"Let's tell the stories, be grateful for the lessons, and treasure the memories".

The night before I learned of Shirley's passing, a wonderful video of author Elizabeth Gilbert made it's way to me. In it, she spoke of the Curiosity Driven Life. I have always believed that Shirley's most admirable quality was her Curiosity...her interest in everything around her: people, places, ideas, words, big things, small things. As she gathered her curiosities, she taught us. Overtly with articles, artifacts and read-alouds. Covertly with her grace, her stories, her devotion to Bill and her cranberry steamed pudding. She was a Teacher among Teachers. But, most importantly, she was a Learner who loved Life. There will never be another Shirley Steinbach. And I choose to believe that it was she who made sure that video made its way to me as one of her parting gifts. I will passionately pursue my own Curiosity Driven Life inspired by her example. Rest in peace, my beloved friend.

I had the pleasure of learning from Shirley many summers in Madison at the WisTEP workshops. Oh, the fun we had! the teaching ideas we shared! Those were some of the best grad classes ever! Shirley was a breed of teachers who we will never be or see again. These days all the joy has gone out of teaching, and testing and getting ready for testing has sadly replaced it. I have to think that Shirley would have had the gumption to go tell her administrators that "absolutely not," she was going to "teach" children, not "test" them. Readily sharing her knowledge and expertise, she helped us remember why we went into teaching in the first place. I am honored to have known her, and I am very sorry for your loss. Shirley simply was the best.

I was a substitute teacher in Madison for many years. It was always an honor to come to Shirley's class when she needed to be gone. Not an easy assignment, though, because the kids were always disappointed to have a sub! You were so correct when you used the words "beloved" and "effective" to describe Shirley. Hers was the only classroom where the children had individual spelling lists to challenge them appropriately. This was a good woman who made a difference in our world!

To the beloved family of Shirley Steinbach,
I remember your Mother fondly, as she was a dear teaching colleague of my Mother, Dora Zastrow. Together they spent many fun years teaching at Glenn Stephens School. Your Mom also let me come in to read to her students. They shared a friendship outside of school as well.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences, and may your own personal memories of your Mom bring you much comfort and joy.
Fondly,
Sally Zastrow Schnarr
