Obituary

MADISON- Robert Joseph "Bob" Mayville, Sr., age 84, of Madison, died after a long illness on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015 at Meriter Hospital. Bob was born on Jan. 19, 1931, in Madison, to Reynolds and Hildegarde (Hartung) Mayville. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953, where he was stationed in and around Boeblingen, Germany. On Oct. 6, 1962, he married Mary A. Diebold. Bob worked for the State of Wisconsin for several decades. After retirement, he worked for Dunham Express. Bob had a sharp wit and a vast knowledge of cars. He could name the make, model, and year of a car on sight. Bob was an avid numismatist and spent a good amount of time at Jim's Coins. He was a lifelong Packers and Badgers football fan. Bob endured the anger-inducing 70's and 80's for both teams to see the return to glory in the 90's and continued success since. Coincidentally, Bob died on Packers-quarterback day: 12/4/15 (Rodgers/Favre/Starr). Bob also greatly lamented the move of the Braves from Milwaukee to Atlanta. He did not attend another baseball game until the late 80's. Bob was known to drive nearly any distance to help someone get where they needed to go. Whether three blocks or to Chicago and back, he was eager to drive – driving was one of his joys. He wheeled and dealed cars in the 50's, including the unfortunate trade of his beloved '57 Plymouth for a '58 Edsel. Even into the 1990's, he and other former Edsel owners would see each other randomly and point out the bad decision they had each made. Bob is survived by Mary, his wife of 53 years; and three children, Robert J. Mayille, Jr., and Mary C. Mayville, both of Madison, and Anne E. Mayville of Nashville, Tenn. He is further survived by three grandchildren, Jade, Cody, and Jasmine Schmitt; a brother-in-law, Bill (Shar) Diebold; and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sarah Louise Mayville; his parents; and his sister, Patricia Lins. The family sends thanks to the caregivers at Meriter, Avalon and Oak Park. A special thanks goes to Fatou at Cairasu Home Care. Per Bob's wishes there will be no visitation or funeral. There will be a family-only goodbye before cremation.
