Obituary
COTTAGE GROVE-Arlene E. Freudenberg, age 81, of Cottage Grove, passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at Oak Park Place, Madison. She was born on Nov. 16, 1933, in Orion Township, in Richland County, the daughter of Max and Lottie (Miller) Schmidt. Arlene attended a one-room school house in Eagle Corner and Neptune, Wis., and for one year attended, Paul's School. Arlene graduated from Ithaca High School, class of 1952, and through the years attended numerous class reunions. Upon her graduation from high school, she began her career with American Family Insurance which lasted 46 ½ years. Arlene was united in marriage to Orville Freudenberg on Aug. 5, 1967. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and active in circle groups at church, as well as the Cottage Grove Historical Society. In her spare time, Arlene and Orville enjoyed travelling. Some of her most memorable trips were to Alaska, Europe and seeing the fall colors on the east coast. Thru American Family Insurance, Arlene was active on the bowling league, the 15 Year Club and the Sporty-40 club, where many fond memories were made. Arlene is survived by her husband, Orville of 48 years; sisters, Maxine (Jerry) Peters of Delavan and Dorothy Schroeder of Madison; sister-in-law, Cecelia Parker of Plano, Texas; nephew, James Beth; nieces, Lynne (Gordy) Bischel, Janet (Christopher) Hughes, Valerie (Greg) Faust and Lisa Terry; great-nieces and nephews, Leah Bischel, Madison Faust, and Margaret and Michael Hughes. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Schmidt; and sister, Ruth (Harold) Beth. A funeral service celebrating Arlene's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at Hope Lutheran Church, 3702 County Road AB, McFarland, with the Rev. Chris Lee-Thompson presiding. Burial will follow at Hope Cottage Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church. A special thank you to the staff of Oak Park Place, especially Willie, and to Heartland Hospice for the exceptional care Arlene received. Although I only knew Arlene and Orville for a short time, I witnessed the love Orville and Arlene shared by the care Orville showed. It was an honor to see such a close family and the support you all have for each other.
