Dean Sailing

MADISON-Dean L. Sailing, age 87, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015. Despite having many health problems, he always stayed positive. Dean was born on Nov. 22, 1927, in Madison, the son of William and Rosina (Harms) Sailing. After his service in the U.S. Army he worked at Ohio Medical (now Ohmeda), and that's where he met his wife, Shirley. They married on Nov. 28, 1948, in Waterloo. He retired in 1986. Dean loved camping and had many campers and cottages. He traveled a great deal with family and friends and to many different countries. He enjoyed Germany and the Alps in Switzerland. Dean also traveled to Hawaii with his wife, son and daughter-in-law. He also enjoyed a cruise and a trip to Yellow Stone. After his retirement he went with Pastor Bratz and helped start a church in Dellwood and became treasurer for the church. Because of health problems, Dean returned to Madison and worked part-time as a supervisor for NASDA. Dean and Shirley spent eight years in Phoenix, Arizona as snowbirds and had many visitors. He was a member of Monona Lutheran Church. Dean is survived by his wife of over 67 years, Shirley; son David (Nancy); grandson, Hayes; sister-in-law, Barbara Sailing; and brother-in-law, Harvey Luther. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Kenneth, Floyd, Robert and Wayne. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 2 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 21, 2015. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon until the time of the service on Monday. The family would like to thank his special friends that helped him when he was unable to do things.
