Obituary
Leiser, Betty
MADISON-Betty Leiser, age 87, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015. She was born in Madison to Wid and Florence Waddell on May 30, 1928. With patriotism instilled at an early age, Betty's mom created flag dresses to wear for her Memorial Day birthday. Mickey Mouse also came on the scene in 1928, and Betty was always a real fan. Both exuded happiness with their big friendly smiles. A proud Madisonian and eastsider, Betty graduated from Madison East High School with the great class of '45. She also graduated from Marquette University and worked as a dental hygienist for a number of years. Betty married the love of her life, Richard Leiser, at Plymouth Congregational Church in 1949. Their two children, Patricia and Mark, were born and raised in Madison. Betty was stricken with polio in 1955. She then became dedicated to helping others and ensuring accessibility in this community. She was a member of MOBIL (Madison's Organization Behind Independent Living) that helped get elderly and handicapped transportation started. She worked for the bus service almost 10 years. She was appointed by the mayor to the Citizens Advisory Committee on Physical Disabilities. Betty worked for the Madison Civic Center many years and helped start a post polio support group as well. For 55 years she was a Red Cross volunteer as a coordinator for one a week blood donations. She also was a part of Yearn to Learn Homemakers Club and an Easter Seals volunteer. Betty was a certified braillist, taught Sunday school and was an active member of Lake Edge United Church of Christ. She enjoyed concerts, the arts, puzzles, playing bridge, celebrations and most especially was blessed by the family, friends and caregivers that touched her life through the years. Betty is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Bill) Hoesly of Columbia, S.C.; son, Mark (Laurie) Leiser of Watertown, Wis., grandchildren, Heather (James) Cook, Ryan (Debbie) Hoesly, Andy (Trinity) Leiser and Ken (fiancé, Haley) Leiser; and great-grandchildren, Hannah and Nathan Cook, and Norah and Sam Leiser. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Richard. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Betty will be held at LAKE EDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 4200 Buckeye Rd., Madison, at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015, with Pastor Lex Liberatore presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Red Cross, Easter Seals, Lake Edge United Church of Christ or Home Health United. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

My late husband Glen & I knew Betty & Richard through our membership at Lake Edge United Church of Christ. Such delightful people they were to know as they became part of our church family. I also knew Betty through dental hygiene as also being a hygienist we attended meetings together. I always marveled at her strength as her disability never kept her from doing many things. I'm glad that our paths did cross in our time here on earth. Blessings to the family. Mary Lou Callin

I got to know Mrs. Leiser through her son Mark as we both graduated together from Lafollette. My deepest sympathy to you and your family in the loss of your mom. Betty was a very kind and gracious person. So full of love and life and she wanted to share what she had to other people. I will never forget her. Since I left Madison and moved to El Paso , I am married now. My prayers are with you Mark and your sister and families. She was a wonderful person

The Hassen Family
We loved when Betty would travel to South Carolina to visit Pat, Bill, Heather, Ryan and Rascal. As the family celebrated being together, Betty would be fully engaged in the activities, laughter, fun and fellowship. Her pleasant smile and cheery disposition was so welcoming and we enjoyed visiting with her. We know Betty was a blessing to many throughout her life. We celebrate you Betty!
