MADISON-Gary Butler, age 70, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at Heritage of Monona. He was born on April 9, 1945, in Madison, the son of Clarence and Leona (Sternhagen) Butler. Gary married Arbutus "Abby" Eggert on May 5, 1968 in Shawano. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1964. Gary worked at UW Photo Media Center for 30 years, and then for seven years at the Wisconsin State Historical Society. Gary is survived by his wife of 47 years, Abby; daughter, Wendy Butler; nieces and nephews, Erik (Kellie) Eggert, Rebekka (Geoffrey) Kieta, Emily (Michael) Mandler and Kristine (Jesse) Rankin; five great-nephews; and four great-nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and aunts and uncles. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, June 18, 2015. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Dear Abby and Wendy
I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I worked with Gary at the Photo Media Center when I was 16 yrs. old and we both had a mutual friend Robert Ostrom as well. Later on, I worked with Gary at the Historical Society on State St. He was so much fun to work with and a very hard worker.
I will miss his smile and laughter and sense of humor. Peace be with you.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Gary's family at this time of your great loss. We were in homeroom 29 for three years and had Herb Mueller as our HR teacher. Gary's health didn't look too good at last summers 50th class reunion. R.I.P. Gary.
