Donald Joseph May

MAY, DONALD J.MIDDLETON/MADISON-Donald J. May, "Grandpa Don", age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2015.  He was born on March 3, 1923, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of Matthew and Mary Schneeweis May.  Don was a World War II veteran who proudly served in the United States Army during the D-day Invasion in Normandy, France.  On August 9, 1947 he was united in marriage to Eileen Bebow in Fond du Lac.  She preceded him in death 1991.   Donald was a graduate of the UW-Madison. He began his retail career with JC Penny and later became the manager of the Emporium at the "new Hilldale".  Don lived his life giving back to others by volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club of Rockford, IL and had worked with teens in Brodhead.  He was named Rockford's Volunteer of the Year in 1989. He also was a past President of Holy Name Society, was Madison's Hometown Hero on Channel 3000, volunteered at various nursing homes where he enjoyed and shared music in the form of sing-alongs, taught religious education at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Lodi, and went to many area school districts where he gave talks to students about World War II.  Don is survived by his children, Mike (Gail) May, Patti May, Kevin May, Katie May; three grandchildren, Laura (Daryle) Mabon, Isaac May and Katrina Fingerson; a daughter-in-law, Gail Ambrosius, and a sister Joyce Fee.  In addition to his wife Eileen, Don was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Beth, and a grandson, Ryan.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at BLESSED TRINITY AT ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 521 Fair Street, Lodi at 2 PM on Friday, June 5, 2015 with the Reverend Father Chad Droessler presiding.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites accorded.  Visitation will be held at HAMRE GUNDERSON FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 157 S. Main Street, Lodi from 5 PM until 7 PM on Thursday, June 4, 2015 and also at the church on Friday from 1 PM until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace HospiceCare., Inc.
