Obituary

MADISON-With deep sadness, the family of John Rex Wilson announce the loss of a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend.  John passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, after suffering cardiac distress while biking the hills outside of Madison.  Born  August 8, 1950 to John and Carol Wilson, he was shaped by an enthusiasm to join-in and always gave back to his community.  Among his family and friends, John was seen as the "connective arch" that brought people together.  The keystone to his strength and character was the enduring love between John and his wife Catherine.  Their devotion to each other blossomed in the Sixties and grew with each major life event--  the birth and nurturing of daughter Dora, John's service in the U.S. Army, both earning degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and service at Madison Parks and Recreation Department and Catherine's contribution as a teacher at the Monona school district.  Second to family, John's passion was the fellowship found in competitive bicycling.  He was an active member of the Great Dane Velo Club and took part in over a hundred races in the past 30 years. John loved the riding more than the race.  It allowed him to connect with people and nature, and allowed him to mature into a mentor.  "John helped boys become men," one friend remembered.  "He taught us to be confident and not to quit.  He helped us become good people and good fathers."  After retirement from the Parks Department John directed more attention to his woodworking skills.  He studied, learned, and practiced almost forgotten techniques, crafting replica and original furniture as well as millwork of enduring quality.  There is little doubt John's friends will remember him for his quality of character and fellowship.  It is certain his dearest Catherine, daughter Dora, her husband Tom, grandchildren, Noah, Katya, Chloe and Lola, and all his extended family will never forget the love and fun he brought to life. Thank you "Bapa Rex" for sharing your life with us.  We are the lucky ones.  Services will be held at ST. LUKE'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 7337 Hubbard Ave., Middleton, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, May 7, 2015, with a time of fellowship and food immediately following the service.  Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., on Wednesday, May 6, 2015.  Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.Gunderson WestFuneral & Cremation Care7435 University Avenue(608)831-6761

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my friend John. He knew how to do everything including making another happy. He loved so many people and his dog Ollie. Taking a walk with him, he knew and was friends with everyone we ran into. John was taken too soon and will be deeply missed. Scott Weiner and Annie Redmond 302 Glenthistle Ct

Deepest condolences to the family. John inspired so many of us to strive to be better riders. Also serving as a shining example of how to embrace life, each and every day with good humor and humility. Truly. One of a kind. Nate Troia, former GDVC President.

Oh gosh I remember John. Long ago (some 34 years) while trying to keep up on a group ride with local fellow cyclists John quietly pulls up to me and says "you can do this, keep going". Words to live by for sure. Also, let it be known that John set the bar when it came to tending the ice at Tenney, the best ice in Madison. I am so sorry for your loss.

Thinking of you Catie, Dora, and the grandkids. From the smallest glimpse of his life I saw, John was a well loved, great man. Sending lots of love, Courtney RN

Besides John's devotion to his family, he was a very sharing person. He mentored dozens of young cyclists, helping them develop their skills in the sport, building their self-esteem, and more importantly, helped them become young men. He also possessed an unparalleled sense of humor and wit. I will miss seeing John's mischievous grin as he embarks on his next adventure. Kyle and Julie
