Obituary
Watson, George
MONONA-George Watson passed away peacefully in his favorite chair at home on Sunday, May 3, 2015, with his family by his side. He was the only child born to Guy and Henrietta Watson in Beloit, on Nov. 9, 1924. He met Cecilia Molash while attending Beloit Memorial High School and they married on Jan. 22, 1943. George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November of 1942. He served six years aboard the U.S.S. Franklin "Big Ben", and U.S.S. Philippine Sea, amongst other ships. George was a Pharmacist Mate 1st Class. During the Korean War he was one of the Navy medical personnel ordered by President Truman to attach to the U.S. Marines to increase ground strength. After honorable discharge, George wanted to be a pharmacist but was not allowed to enter the program because he was married. He was a carpenter apprentice known for high quality craftsmanship. George and Cecilia built their family home. His lifelong dedication to community service began at the Beloit Police Department. He often commented, "Everybody should be a police officer for six months to a year so they can understand what it's like to be one. People always think police are the bad guys." In 1956, he became a charter member of the Town of Beloit Fire Department, rising to rank of Captain. George left Beloit to pursue the chief position for the Fire Department in DePere, Wis., from there he moved to Monona and initially served as assistant chief of Fire and EMS and later became Chief of Fire and EMS. From the 1960's to 1988 he was active in the Wisconsin and National Fire Association and State Fire Service Instruction. After his retirement from Monona Fire and EMS, George was employed as a Fire Service Instructor at Madison Area Technical College. In addition to many years of fire and EMS training, he fulfilled his master's in education degree requirements. George enjoyed fishing, hunting and participating in rendezvous re-enactments. He especially loved spending time with his family and derived much enjoyment spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. George is survived by his daughters, Georgia Quinn, Deborah Rugg, Mary Watson (Tom Georgeson) and Jennie Watson (Michael Howe); six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 56 years, Cecilia; daughter, Pamela; and sons-in-law, Dennis Quinn and Steve Rugg. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison at 1 p.m., on Saturday, May 9, 2015. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. A private burial will be held at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family and will be distributed to George's favorite charities. Eternal gratitude to granddaughter, Sarah Watson and Jeremy Karstetter who provided 24 hour loving care for the past five months. Also, special thanks to the entire Wildwood Family Clinic staff, especially Dr. Paul Wertsch and Diane, CMA whom over the years, demonstrated care and respect which George very much appreciated. Also, to Melissa, RN, Sherry, CNA and Sister Georgeanne of Home Health United Hospice. Last but not least, Kate and David Allen for your friendship and watchful eye, he often spoke fondly of you. Dad will be remembered for his commitment to public service and a kind, loving heart. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I haven't seen George for quite a while. But I remember his fire fighting teachings, his sense of humor, and his integrity. most of all, I can say that he was a friend of mine. Rest in peace Chief Watson.

It was such an honor to get to know and care for George. He was such a smart, talented, funny and loving man.
It was so amazing to see all the love and support this family had for each other. I only wish everybody had this. He will be missed by many and never forgotten.

I met your dad as a child of Verona volunteer firefighter and then as a fellow employee at MATC. He always had a hello and how are you doing. May wonderful memories ease your sorrow. Elaine Zingg Wilkinson
