Obituary

Warzyn, Jeanne MADISON-Jeanne Warzyn, age 94, organist and choir director, composer and arranger of vocal solo, choral, organ and handbell music, died on Thursday, April 16, 2015, at the Agrace Hospice Center, after a brief illness. The daughter of Eugene and Loretta (Grimmer) Carroll, she graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1938 and received her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish degree from the University of Wisconsin on June 1, 1942. On the same day, she married Willard Warzyn who was to remain her husband for 71 years until his death in 2013. To advance her musicianship, she returned to the University of Wisconsin and earned her Master's Degree in Organ Performance in 1965. In 1948, she and her husband became charter members of Lake Edge Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) where she later became the church organist. She continued this service for 22 years, gave organ recitals in the surrounding area and provided free organ lessons for one deserving student per year through her organ scholarship. Several of her students continued their study of organ and became professional organists themselves. Her involvement at Lake Edge also included directing several children's choirs, a "Triple Trio" (a choir of 9 high school girls) and, later, the handbell choir – a position she held until she was 92 years old. When her husband retired from his business (Warzyn Engineering), they moved to rural Hollandale and built a tree farm. In Hollandale, she started a community handbell choir which performed throughout southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. After taking on the position of handbell choir director at Lake Edge church, they moved back to the Madison area and settled in Cottage Grove.  Although music was her main love, she also enjoyed sewing, craft projects and gardening. She passed these skills on, not only to her daughters, but also taught sewing to the girls in the neighborhood through the 4-H program – helping them win blue ribbons at the county and state fairs. Jeanne Warzyn is survived by her daughters, Carol (Loren) Berge of Albuquerque, NM., Judy Thorpe of Madison, Janet (William Kruse) Warzyn of Berkeley, Calif.; three grandchildren, Heather (Scott Thom) Thorpe of Madison, Reid (Cara) Thorpe of Chaska, Minn., and Geoff Berge of Ashburn, Va.; six great-grandchildren; her brother, Joseph Carroll of Victoria, Minn.; and sister, Suellen Carroll of Woodbury, Minn. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Thomas Carroll; and son-in-law, Charles Thorpe. The family would like to extend a special thank you for the compassionate care that she received and the beautiful surroundings she was able to enjoy at Agrace HospiceCare. A "Celebration of Life" service will take place at LAKE EDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 4200 Buckeye Road, Madison, at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 25, 2015. Visitation will take place at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.  A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warzyn-Thorpe Music Scholarship Fund, University of Wisconsin Foundation, 1848 University Ave., Madison, Wisconsin 53716, or to Agrace HospiceCare Foundation, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711. I am so sorry about your loss. Please take comfort in God's for you and his promise in the Bible for a resurrection hope for our loved ones. John 5:28 - Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice... My prayers are with your family..

Jeanne was a treasured friend. Her generosity of spirit, love of family, and vitality were inspirations to me. Her support of students training to be educators and singers at UW-Madison meant the world to these young aspiring musicians, and they loved seeing Jeanne and Willard at concerts and operas, cheering them on. A legacy of family, friends, and music--Jeanne leaves all this to us and to the world.

I'm sad to hear the news of Jeanne Warzyn's passing. I've known her since I worked for her husband at Warznyn Engineering dating back to 1970. The Warzyn's were more friends to me than an employer. Our birthdays were about a month apart so we tried to meet for lunch each summer to toucn base and celebrate our birthdays. We did this for many years, even after Mr. Warzyn retired from the company. The last few years when we got together, Jeanne was Willard's 'chauffer' and she participated in our lunches but she was happy to sit back and listen to us talk about the "good old days at Warzyn". We were so busy getting caught up that she seldom had a chance to get a word in edgewise! Mr. Warzyn always enjoyed hearing about what his former employees were doing and where their careers had led them. I always admired the respectful and loving relationship the Warzyn's had for each other. The last time we had lunch, as we were leaving the restaurant, Jeanne stopped at the ladies room. I asked Mr. Warzyn if I could help him to the car and he responded "No, that's OK, I'll wait for my Bride". That comment brought a smile to my heart. Her passing means Willard's wait for his Bride is now over and they are together again. May the love they shared bring comfort to those who meant the most to them. With love, respect and deepest sympathy to the Warzyn family.

Carol, Judy, Janet and families, My deepest condolences to all of you. Mrs. Warzyn was an amazing woman. I am forever grateful and honored to have been one of her first scholarship students and receiving her knowledge, guidance and life lessons while learning to play the Lake Edge UCC pipe organ. I still have the notes she gave me after my first recital at LEUCC. Succinct and very supportive. I continued to study with her until I went to UW-Madison and studied with Prof. Harvey. After graduating from the UW, I then did a few more years of study with Mrs. Warzyn. She was always patient, yet meticulous in what she wanted me to accomplish and her lessons provided a solid base, allowing me to be a substitute organist at many different churches around the Madison area, and beyond. Weddings, funerals, and Sunday services had me practicing and organizing, following her great examples and lessons. Beyond the music, I admired her and Mr. Warzyn for their many gifts from the heart. The support they gave the LEUCC community, sharing their love of travel with slide presentations, having many learn and join in the delight of playing in a hand bell chorus, and their love of nature. I read how Mrs. Warzyn helped sewers in 4-H, not having known that she shared another one of her many interests to young people. Mr. and Mrs. Warzyn were friends to many, and I cherished my conversations with both of them throughout the many years of seeing them while growing up. I know my parents, George and Grace Pollard, considered them dear friends, too. My thoughts are with you. Georgia Pollard Madison, WI

Carol, Judy, Janet and extended families, my sympathies go out to you all. Your Mom and Dad were always so kind to me and they seemed to take a genuine interest in my life whenever our paths crossed. I enjoyed the extra vegetables that they were so willing to share from their gardens over the span of many years. I admired your Mom's great homemaker skills....sewing, baking, etc. And of course, I loved the wonderful music at Lake Edge. More recently, I admired her great care of your Dad as his health declined. They were a very good example of a loving couple! Take good care of yourselves and may God help you to travel this journey of loss. God Bless You All, Linda (Nickeson) Brown, Wauwatosa, WI

Jeanne and Willard's extended family in Berkeley were the recipients of many of their homemaking skills. We received jams, jellies, applesauce, pickles, and cookies, brownies and decorated cookies for special occasions. We marveled at Jeanne's sewing ability....making ALL of her own clothes! Recently we heard an organ recital she presented in the 80's......another WOW! The Warzyn Duo were organized people, they planned, plotted, and carried through on whatever idea they attempted, whether it was a garden, a trip, or support for the young people in their lives. We see the strength of character and the creative skills in Janet, Judy and Carol...........the torch is passed and burning brightly.
