MADISON-Arthur H. Mann, Jr., a good and honest man, died March 9, 2015. Born October 16, 1929, to Arthur H. and Eleanor (Lochner) Mann, he attended Madison schools, graduating from East High in 1947; then attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, until 1951 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. In 1955, he returned to UW-Madison, graduating in 1957 from the School of Education. He then taught Social Studies in Iowa for five years. By 1961, Art had received a Master’s degree in Education from UW-Madison. In 1962, he began teaching for the Madison Metropolitan School District as a Social Studies instructor at West Junior High. With the system’s shift to middle schools in 1971, Art joined Cherokee Middle School as a Language Arts/Social Studies teacher. He retired in 1994, having taught children for thirty-seven years.
During his Madison teaching career, Art was active in Madison Teachers, Inc. (MTI) serving on its board and as president. He was on the initial board for Crime Stoppers, Inc. He was especially proud to be a Madison resident and could not fathom a zip code other than Madison.
Art married Sharon Pierce, a fellow Iowa teacher, in 1959. They were married 55 years and have three children. Through the years, Art and Sharon traveled the U.S. often, with their children or with friends, sometimes to reunions of his Air Force service friends. He was a golfer, card player, lover of trains, and meticulous yard keeper. He loved concerts (especially on the square) and Babcock ice cream. In retirement, Art was a Madison election official along with Sharon. Parkinson’s disease had become part of his life, then dementia, so in 2011 he began living in a memory care facility. He is part of the Wisconsin Brain Donor Program.
Art is survived by wife Sharon, children Kathryn Mann Arnott (Stephen Arnott), Mary Mann, and James A. Mann (Cheryl Boehle) and grandchildren Erik, Kelsey and Nissa Bredesen, Olivia Prendergast, and Abigail and Nicole Mann.
A memorial gathering will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE located at 7435 University Avenue, Middleton, WI 53562. A brief service will begin at 3:00 p.m. The family welcomes guests to stay for a time to visit after the service.

Art was indeed "a good and honest man" and a good teacher, a good colleague, and someone who really enjoyed life. When I started teaching in Madison it was at West Junior with Art and a bunch of other good teachers who became friends. I was assigned to proctor a study hall with Art and I made some disciplinary mistakes - Art went to bat for me upholding my tattered authority. He was always supportive and encouraging. I learned a lot. That was the last year for West Junior and the only year I taught at the same school. We remained in contact because of our mutual involvement in MTI. Good memories. RIP

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Mann for a teacher at Cherokee in the mid 80's. He was one of my favorite teachers there. He used to sing "And the Band Played On" to me-- I am a redhead and the girl in the song has "a strawberry curl." I recall that he was meticulous about his classroom, and used to make us pick up all the little paper scraps off the floor before we left. At one point I believe we took up a collection to buy him a dustbuster, in hopes that we would then be able to get out of this task, but no such luck. I enjoyed hearing his stories about growing up in Madison. I hope he got to take a trip on the Trans-Siberian railroad. He was a wonderful teacher. My sincere condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. I also had Mr. Mann as a teacher at Cherokee Middle School in the late 70's. What I loved most were his stories, his smiles for his students everyday and how he made us all feel good about ourselves. Middle school can be a really hard time for young adults and he made us feel special. I am sure he was a great dad and husband to you all. God Bless, Jennifer Frankey-Moehn

So sorry to hear the sad news. Art and my husband, Howard, were high school and beyond friends and Art was in our wedding in 1957. Years later we were so happy to have him teach our kids at West and Cherokee. His students loved him, respected him and he taught them well. He is one of those few teachers who made a lasting impression on his students, including our own kids...the teacher you never forget. Altho we lost touch over the years, I'm sure Howie will be among many waiting to greet his old friend on the other side. RIP good and honest Mann!

I remember Arthur Mann as a kind and caring man who was immensely curious. Just as I write this I look at the picture and realize how perfectly it captures Mr. Mann. I only met him once but I'll never forget. I had no place to go that Christmas and his daughter Mary invited me to come along and celebrate that day with her parents. I am from Austria and although Arthur Mann never visited Europe, he was immensely curious about it. Thank you, Mr. Mann, for making me feel important that day! You were so very kind to me.
