Some kids refer to themselves as “latch-key kids”. We had the good fortune of being raised in a traditional ‘50s home with a stay-at-home mom and an 8-5 working father where we sat down as a family for our meals. It was a race at dinner-time to see who could finish first and snatch the biggest piece of cake or pie mom had baked for us. I recall walking less than one-quarter of a mile from Schenk for lunch that mom had waiting on the table for me. I have fond memories of the aroma of her homemade spaghetti sauce, strawberry-rhubarb pie or something else she had generously prepared wafting throughout our home. While I would consider her a quiet woman by today’s standard, she always made sure to provide for us the best she could and her door and heart were always open for us.
