Obituary

Ahrens-Sather, Judy M. WESTPORT/MADISON– Judy M. “Misty” Ahrens-Sather, age 77, passed away surrounded by her loved ones, on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at Stoughton Hospital, after a valiant struggle with lung disease. Judy was born in Madison, on Aug. 4, 1937, the eldest child of Kenneth and Barbara (Natwick) Ahrens. She graduated from Madison East High School in 1955. Judy worked as a secretary for National Cash Register where she would meet her future husband Robert (Bob) Sather. Bob and Judy were united in marriage on Oct. 1, 1960, at Grace Episcopal Church in Madison. Together they raised four children. Throughout the years Judy enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, going to movies and was actively involved in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, as well as a long time member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority chapter. Judy loved butterflies and the color purple. She in fact was so fond of the two that she decided on her 65th birthday to get her first and only tattoo of, you guessed it, a purple butterfly! Other "loves" in her life would include Elvis, The Game Show Network, Cappuccino, Arizona Tea, Twizzlers, and Fritos. There were very few times you would find Judy without a Cappuccino or bag of Twizzlers in hand. Judy is survived by her children, Glen (Melissa) Sather of Apple Valley, Minn., Kristin (Marshal) Urbanz of Woodbury, Minn., Jennifer (David) Mills of DeForest, and Erica Sather of Madison; grandchildren, Teal, Maren, Maddie, Gabe, Brody, Connor, Brayden, Alexa, and Lillian; sisters, Meredy (Ernie) Highley of Sun Prairie, Barbara Hauge of Madison, and Susie (Brad) Stachoviak of Madison; a brother, John Ahrens of Orange, Calif.; half-sisters, Mary Ahrens, Pam Alexander, Vicki Ahrens, Debbie Smith, and Patty Ahrens-Brady; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved cat, Sylvia. Judy was preceded in death by mother, Barb (James) Aspel; father, Ken (Virginia “Toots”) Ahrens; former husband, Bob; and an infant daughter, Lori Ellen. A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015. Visitation will be held at the funeral home, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Judy’s name to Yahara House/ Journey Mental Health, 802 E. Gorham St., Madison 53703. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the caring and compassionate staff at both Nazareth Rehab Center and Stoughton Hospital during Mom's final days. Particularly to nurse Jessica who we believe was a guardian angel in disguise. "There's more----there's more." Rest in Peace Mom…we love you! Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Glen, Melissa and family -- sorry to read of your mother's passing. I think back to our high school days and how we didn't dwell on how the passage of time brings us to these moments. Life seemed to stand still (especially in the classroom...) and now it seems to be slipping through our fingers faster and faster. May you find comfort in knowing your mother was loved by those around her and that your family and friends feel the same about you. Terry and Diane Wendt

I knew Judy (Flame) from work at Job Service and from bingo. We always enjoyed Barbara (we called her "the Director") at the bingo hall. Judy visited my house several times, one for my daughter Joni's graduation. I will truly miss her and her quirky humor. Talked to her by phone several times recently. Condolences to the family.
