Childs, Laura Anna “Tutu”
MADISON-Laura Anna “Tutu” Childs, beloved mother, Tutu and great Tutu passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 29, 2015. Tutu was born on February 20, 1927 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the daughter of John Sabey and Anna Kawaiaea Sabey. She graduated from Kamehameha School and worked at Pearl Harbor during World War II as a messenger. She was very proud that two pilots painted her name on their airplanes. She attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison majoring in piano and dance. It is where she met her Kuuipo “sweetheart” Bradley R. Childs. They were married on July 6, 1947. To support her Ohana “family” she worked as a unit clerk in the emergency room at Madison General Hospital and retired when it became Meriter. Tutu had a lifelong passion for music and played piano for many years Bethel Lutheran Church and with the XYZ Club on Friday mornings. Tutu shared her love of the Hawaiian Islands with everyone she met but especially handing down traditions, stories, and love to her Ohana. Laura is survived by eight children, Bradley “Tuffy” Childs, Jacqueline Childs, Marquis and Steph Childs, Vicki and John Domack, Katherine and Ritchie Otis, Patricia and Grant Berggren, Pollyanna Kaske, and Christopher and Tina Childs; grandchildren, Jasen and Laura, Josh and Linda, Alyshia and Will, Nichole and Michael, Natalie, Adam and Liz, Kyra and Chris, Brandon and Kate, Sabrina, Damon, Chad and Jess, Bradley “Bear” and Samantha, Karissa, Joseph, Jacob, Dylan, Katie, Jessie, David, and Katie; great-grandchildren, Alan, Alyssa, Brittany, Alexa, Donovan, Dominic, Madisen, Emma, Caleb, Mason, Ayden, Gaven, Luca, Lilianna, Delila, Anakin, Jackson, Xander, Izak, and Wyatt; and brother, John Sabey of Hawaii, nephews Scott, Mark, and Isaiah and Hee Soon, Isaiah Jr., Hannah, Jack Childs and family; friends, Art and Norma Barr, Al Spears, the Domack family, the Otis family, Ed Bennicase and family, the Meseberg/Slinde family, the Altenberger family, the Blankenhiem family, Carla and Julio Almeida, Byron Peterson and family, Amy LeVan, Stacey Sturm, Tim Kaske, Doug Johnson, Amanda Hollis, Mike Sletten, Nikki Pullen, John Quinones, and many others. She was preceded in death by her “Kuuipo” husband of sixty years Bradley R. Childs, her parents John and Anna, nephew Hanwell, and sister-in-laws Marilyn Sabey and Maxine Schmoll. Funeral services will be held at BETHEL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015. Visitation will be held at the church from Noon until the time of the service on Tuesday. The Ohana would like to extend a special Mahalo “thank you” to Dr. Eimermann at Dean, the staff at Oak Park especially Dave, Seth, and Diane, and Agrace Hospice for their loving care given to our Tutu. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Tutu’s alma mater: Kamehameha School. Aloha Ke Akua! “God is Love!”

I worked with Laura from 1979 to 1985 at the old MGH. I cannot remember Laura without a smile on her face. I have been blessed to have worked and crossed your path Laura.
