Hansen, Marvin Jerome
MADISON–Marvin Jerome Hansen, age 85, died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, Dec. 15, 2014. He was born on April 14, 1929, in Minneapolis, the son of Roy and Ruby Hansen. Marvin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1949, trained as a radio operator and was sent with the 1st Division to Korea. He was involved in the landings at Inchon and Seoul and was one of the “Frozen Chosen” in the Chosin Reservior Campaign in North Korea. Marv and many Wisconsin veterans were awarded the Korean War Service Medal on Veterans Day 2000 at a state capitol ceremony. Following his discharge, Marv returned to Minneapolis and attended Dunwoody Institute and was subsequently hired by IBM as a technical engineer. Before being transferred to Madison he married Joan Erickson, also of Minneapolis. After 35 years he retired from IBM as a Field Engineer Specialist. Marv was a member of Monona United Methodist Church for 55 years during which time he served on several committees, taught Sunday school and volunteered for many various projects. Marv enjoyed golfing and bowling with IBM friends and with the MARBA and MARGA Leagues. It is suspected that his yearly fishing trips with old Minneapolis neighborhood buddies resulted in more reminiscing than fishing. Marv is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joan; daughters, Paula (Rick) Ritschard of Monticello, and Marcia Hansen of Madison; and sister, Donna Jean (Harlan) Holman of Joshua, Texas. He is further survived by grandsons, Cory Ritschard, Ryan Ritschard and Tyler Ritschard, all of Monticello; sister-in-law, Judith Pomerleau of Edina, Minn.; brother-in-law, Paul (Joyce) Erickson of Minneapolis, Minn.; as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Roy T. Hansen. Funeral services will be held at MONONA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 606 Nichols Rd., Monona, at 11 a.m., on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Monona United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice. How sad to read of my friend Marvin's passing. I truly enjoyed our talks on golf and bowling while cutting his hair all these past years. We laughed often how his friends accused him of coloring his hair when in reality, he hardly had a gray hair in his head. I will miss him, may he rest in peace.

I will never forget being a kid and getting excited to know you were coming to Grandmas house for a visit. I knew that meant I would see that warm gentle smile of yours. I always enjoyed that. My mom; your sister, is sad. She misses her big brother. She has always been so proud of both her brothers. She loves you with ALL her heart and soul. Aunt Joan, Paula, Marcia...I am so sorry for your loss. We all wish we could be there with you. Although we are not there in person, we are there in our hearts and in prayer. Please know we love you; we are family. Uncle Marv, mom wants to write something, but I don't know if she can find her words yet. I think she just can't find the words to say thank you for being the man in her life that you were. She loves you so much! Don't worry. I will look after her and take good care of her. Rest in peace.
