McGregor, Sandy
OREGON-Sandy McGregor, age 76, of Oregon, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, at his home. He was born on Aug. 16, 1938, in Corvallis, Ore., the son of Harold A. and Verna R. (Roberts) McGregor. He was united in marriage to Martha Wigdahl. Sandy grew up in Salem, Ore., and graduated from Covallis High School in 1956. He attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. where he earned his B.S. degree in 1961 and his M.S. degree in 1963. Sandy continued his educational studies at the Baylor College of Medicine where he received his PH.D. in Virology in 1969. He continued his work at the UW-Madison for post-graduate research in polio virus and rhinovirus. Sandy later worked as a research scientist in influenza and other animal viruses at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine until 1985. He then moved to the private sector as Operations Manager at BioProducts for Science, a division of Harlan Industries, until his retirement in 2008 at the age of 70. Sandy continued to consult part-time for biotech companies in the Madison area. In his retirement he spent many hours researching his genealogy. Sandy could be found at the fitness center five days most weeks, joining his friends from cardiac rehab and joint replacement surgeries. He enjoyed traveling, especially to the State of Oregon to visit his brother, cousins, and friends or wherever fresh seafood and crab were served. Most of all he enjoyed people, friends, family, new places and mystery novels. Sandy is survived by his wife, Martha; daughter, Sabrina (Andrea); granddaughter, Karen; step-daughter, Dagna; step-son, Karl; brother, David; sister, Molly; and nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends including Danneke. A memorial service celebrating Sandy’s life will be held at ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 625 Netherwood, Oregon, at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014,with the Rev. Paul Markquart officiating. A time of gathering will be held at the church from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Dear Martha and Karen, my thoughts have been with you and your family all week. I worked with Sandy at Harlan for 5 years, and then was so fortunate to have him as part of our IACUC team here at United Vaccines for the last 8 years. I will always remember Sandy's passion for his work at Harlan and his extraordinary depth of knowledge in virology and immunology, but what I remember most and will miss the most is the sparkle in his eye when he was having a spirited discussion or preparing to deliver a feisty comment. I could hear him laughing in his office two halls away when I was in my office. What an exceptional person he was. I hope that your memories of him will provide you some solace during this difficult time. Sandy will be missed by many and I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to have known him. My deepest sympathy, Rebecca Kerns
