Florey, Daniel Thomas MADISON/BELOIT– On Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, Dan Florey, age 62, ended his long dance with alcohol at the UW Hospital in Madison. Daniel Thomas Florey was born June 6, 1952 in Beloit, Wis., the youngest child of Robert and Caroline (Capps) Florey. Dan attended Beloit schools, the UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee, graduating with a degree in structural engineering and with a lifelong love of architecture, music, fine food and wine. One of Dan’s great pleasures was to produce superb food including his famous hard rolls, and then to enjoy lengthy discussions of food, wine, music and current events over a dinner table in good company. Dan loved his music and was a total nut about his A-V equipment. He made his home into a theater where he hosted gatherings of musical friends and exhibited his infamous ‘air guitar’ playing. Children and cats were drawn to him; he was always good for a cuddle. He will also be remembered for his love of football and golf, and the Fritz Kaump Memorial golf outings he helped organize. For most of his professional career Dan engineered hospitals and medical buildings at Marshall Erdman and Associates. At Erdman, he always had time to help a fellow employee with his expertise, provided with a smile. He was an engineer who had a special gift for quickly understanding the intent of the design and for solving issues with logic and common sense -- and a slide rule. Everywhere Dan lived, worked and played, he made friends-good friends who loved him and held him in high regard throughout his life. They remember Dan as a good person, a brilliant, talented, funny, sweet-hearted, decent and kind man. Their memories, and the many buildings he engineered, are his legacy. Dan is survived by his brother, James of Ann Arbor; and sister, Martha of Monona; his nieces, Lia (Larico Harley) Florey and Britt (Daniel) Riedler and their children, Zili, Bennett and Ryan; his affectionate cousins; and a host of friends. Dan was married for many years to Shawna McGee of Livingston, Mont. He was predeceased by his parents; and his brothers, Chuck and Rob. At Dan’s wish, there will be no funeral, but a memorial gathering will celebrate his life 1 p.m. Saturday Dec. 13, 2014 at the Hody Bar & Grill in Middleton. Dan’s ashes will be buried at East Lawn Cemetery in Beloit with his parents and brother, Rob. Memorials may be made in his name to the Fritz Kaump Memorial Fund, the Middleton Area Ministries (MOM) charities, Dane County Habitat for Humanity, Inc., or to a charity of your choice.
