Obituary

Cari Becker Myles Family and friends mourn the loss of Carolyn Becker Myles who left her body to explore the universe on October 23, 2014. Cari was the youngest of four children born to Rev. Harold Becker and Anne Aardal Becker in 1953. Like many “PKs” Cari spent her youth in a variety of locations: Denver and Sterling, CO; Blair, NE and Waverly, IA, where she graduated from high school. She received her BA in Sociology from Wartburg College in 1975 and her Masters of Social Work degree from UW Milwaukee in 1979. She fell madly in love with Tom Myles and they were married in 1982. Two exceptional children followed: Blayne in 1985 and Kristi Marie in 1987. The Myles family made their home in exotic places: Adana, Turkey; Welschbillig and Feilsdorf, Germany; and Okinawa, Japan. Tom was employed by the U.S. Dept of Defense as a teacher and Cari as a social worker. Tom retired in 2007 and Cari continued her rewarding career at the VA Hospital in Madison counseling soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, including those with traumatic brain injuries. When not working Cari enjoyed golf, playing the piano and singing in the Madison Festival Choir. Cari bravely weathered the sudden death of her husband, Tom, in 2008 and the return of breast cancer in 2011. She recently entered hospice care and died at home with her children at her side. Cari was preceded in death by father, Rev. Harold Becker, mother, Anne Aardal Becker and husband of 26 years, Thomas Patrick Myles. She is survived by children Blayne and Kristi; siblings Kristi, Jane and John; sister-in-law Robbie; and many nieces and nephews. Services Saturday, November 1, 11:30 am at Kingo Lutheran Church, 1225 E. Olive St., Shorewood, WI 53211.

We are so saddened to hear of Cari's passing from this earth. We were great friends with both Cari and Tom in Germany and Japan. Cari was a compassionate person and always passionate about helping others in need. She had a great sense of humor and was a very intelligent lady. She loved music and her whole being was full of it. She loved adventure...she had to be up for adventure to be able to live in Turkey, Germany, Japan, and even WIsconsin! But most of all she was a great friend and a loving mother. All that is Cari will be missed. But the time has come for her new adventures exploring the Universe and uniting with Tom again has begun. Goodbye Cari. We love you. DJ & Glynn Grace

Cari came through some difficult times in her life, particularly in the last few years. But her life had a great deal of joy too - in her family, her travels, her work, her music. She met everything that came her way with strength and optimism. She never let anything defeat her spirit. Cari was an example to us all. I'm sure the Universe holds many amazing experiences for Cari. Tom can show her the hot spots. Bon Voyage, Old Friends!

Cari was a wonderful person and a dear friend. We went to college together and shared many wild times and experiences. She was so much fun and loved to laugh. One thing I admired most about Cari was her Spirit and she was so kind and sweet.! We visited Cari and Tom when they lived in Germany-drank a few beers and saw the sights with them. They really liked being there, enjoyed their work -traveling and having a family. She was happy to have her kids around -Blayne and Kristi, and very proud of them. (They have been a joy to her.) Later, I was fortunate to work with Cari at the VA . I admired her commitment to her profession and to her patients. She was passionate about her work and her patients . I feel vey blessed and appreciate very much - having had the opportunity to spend time with her-share experiences once again, laugh and have fun. I will miss Cari very much but I will remember her often. She leaves behind a very loving and caring family. Love you, Cari. Mary Plaut and Family

We know Cari through the Festival Choir of Madison. Cari was always available to help the choir; as a board member, organizer of our annual silent auction and dedicated member, even when she was going through treatments and challenges. My favorite memory of Cari was signing with her at Blackhawk Country Club, standing next to her singing carols. I loved her humor and her lovely alto voice and her fighting spirit. Cari also worked with my brother Eric, who suffered a traumatic brain injury when stationed with the Army Reserve in Afghanistan. I know she helped Eric in so many ways, and I am grateful for her influence in his life and so many others lives through her work at the VA. I know Cari has a special place in heaven and is certainly singing with the angels.

Cari was one of the most wonderfully positive people I ever knew. It was my great honor to call both her and her husband Tom my friends. We traveled together and I was inspired by her warm heart and wonder at the world around her. I know that there is another star in heaven! God's blessings to Cristi, Blaine and the rest of the family.

Cari and I grew up together in high school and we were neighbors. We could laugh so much when we were together...not sure we knew why we were always laughing. A short story to share..Cari pierced my ears our senior yr...ice cube,potato.needle...she was so gentle while piercing them..once again we laughed..saying my Mother was going to be very mad at me but she would not be mad at Cari...God sometimes chooses to take the best..because he needs a little help in heaven and I believe He knew Cari was one of the best...so generous, kind, loving and I loved her laugh...My heart goes out to the family..
