Thompson, Marjorie Joan (Berge) MONONA/MADISON – Marjorie Joan Thompson (Berge), of Monona, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital after a sudden illness. Marjorie was born on May 26, 1933, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Dorothy Foster and Abel John Berge. She married Lee Thompson on April 19, 1954, in Madison, Marjorie was educated at the University of Wisconsin, where she earned a bachelor's degree in home economics education in 1954. She returned to the University in 1964, earning her first master's degree in teaching reading, and returned again in the early 1980's to earn a second master's degree in linguistics. Marjorie taught for the DeForest Area School District for thirty-seven years; most of her teaching there was in the middle school, with the sixth grade interdisciplinary teams. She most enjoyed teaching reading and math. Following her retirement, Marjorie volunteered at Lowell Elementary School in Madison, actively partnering with teachers in kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade classes. She loved to learn, and took great joy in helping her students learn to love learning. Marjorie was a charter member of Lake Edge Lutheran Church, and was an active member there, teaching Sunday school for several years when her own children were young, and then singing in the adult choir for several decades. Marjorie is survived by her brother, John of Racine; five children: Christine of Madison; Elisabeth (Bernie Albert) of Cottage Grove; Thea (Jim Cummings) of Bedford, Ind.; Kate of Madison; and John (DuAnn) of Minneapolis; as well as five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; her parents; and her older sister, Barbara. I don't know how I happened to run across this, but I remember her well from DeForest Middle School. Mrs. Thompson was a rock solid teacher of all things. My condolences and sympathies.

I can't think of Lake Edge Lutheran without remembering Marge (and Lee, of course). My condolences to her family, including her Lake Edge family.
