Obituary

MONONA-Grace A. Daggett, age 89, of Monona, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital with family at her side. She was born March 6, 1925 in Hatley, Wis. Grace began working for Marathon Electric in Wausau, Wis. during World War II as an assembler of B-17s. In addition, she played second base for the Marathon Electric fast pitch traveling team. She served in the WAVES division of the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 and was honorably discharged. Grace was a VFW Ladies Auxiliary lifetime member and charter member of Women in Military Service for America. The former Grace A. Ostrowski married Joseph J. Daggett, a U.S. Army Sergeant in World War II, on Oct. 19, 1946, and they were married 47 years until Joseph preceded her in death. The call to serve and help others would continue throughout Grace’s life as she served several terms as President of the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW, and was captain of the VFW Post No. 7591 Auxiliary Madison Dayettes Color Guard. She was active in the community and a passionate volunteer at the Monona Senior Center and through the St. Anne’s Society with Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where she also was a long time member. A talented knitter, Grace knitted newborn hats and renal sleeves as part of her volunteer work for St. Mary’s Hospital. After going to work for the State of Wisconsin for 18 years, Grace retired in 2008 at the age of 83. Ever active, she loved being outdoors and enjoyed her gardening and lawn work. Inside, she was equally skilled at crafts and baking, particularly known for her Christmas cookies and famous fudge. Grace was also an avid follower and fan of Brewers baseball and frequent cross country trip traveler, she just recently completed the Badger Honor Flight. Of all Grace’s activities, her family always came first as a devoted wife and caregiver to her husband, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a perfect combination of independence, honesty, wit and compassion. Grace is survived by her children, Joseph “Jim” (Bonnie) Daggett, Dennis (Peg) Daggett, Jeanne (Steve) Lawver and Ronald (Jean) Daggett; grandchildren, Joseph “Joe” (Amanda), Derek (Kim), Danielle, Bryan (Karly), Shannon (Nick), Nikki (Andrew), Kyle and Brett; great-grandchildren, McKenzie, Madison, Brinley and unborn child, Lauren, Cohen, Breken, Boston, Dexter and Mack; and a brother, Clair (Jeanette) Ostrowski. In addition to her husband, Grace was preceded in death by her parents; and nine brothers and sisters. A funeral service will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St, Monona, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2014. A committal service will follow at HIGHLAND MEMORY GARDENS, 3054 County Road Bb, Madison, with military rites performed by the Madison Veterans Firing Squad. I had the pleasure of working with Grace at the State Department of Health Services. She was truly a delightful person, always so pleasant and thoughtful. I lost touch with her for awhile and then ran into her again in the Wilson Street building a few years later and we caught right up on each others lives. I was at the airport to welcome back the Veterans just a year or so ago and who do I see coming down the escalator towards the crowd, but Grace. She remembered me right away and I was so happy to see her! What a wonderful, wonderful person! I know she'll have a special place in heaven.
