Obituary

MADISON-Carol Lee Coe (Rhodes), age 71, passed peacefully September 7, 2014 following a brief illness. Carol was born December 26, 1942, in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Allen and Dorothy Rhodes. Carol grew up in a farm community in Illinois and from a young age loved all animals. Horses held a special place for her and she loved riding her horse Danny. She was a graduate of Williamsville High School and attended Springfield Junior College. Employed by the Franklin Life Insurance Company in Springfield, she met the love of her life, Samuel B. Coe, and they married in August 1964. The next year, she had a son, Donn Coe, and was a devoted mother. Sam and Carol decided to start new roots and ended up in Madison Wisconsin for the last 43 years. Carol was very proud of her son and his accomplishments and watched his successes when after college he moved to New England. In August 2014, Carol and Sam celebrated their Golden Anniversary. Carol’s love of animals and nature were hallmarks of her life. She adopted and cared for older special need cats providing comfort and love in their final years. Days were spent walking through the Arboretum with its varied wildlife and the beautiful scenery. She was an avid reader. At home, she enjoyed watching the birds and other wildlife antics at the feeders. Carol was full of life and enjoyed sharing stories. She was preceded in death by her parents Allen E. and Dorothy Rhodes, a half-sister Shirley Jean Rhodes Hays, and by half-brothers Alvin “Mike” Rhodes, Keith D. Rhodes, Kenneth Martin, and Alan Martin. Carol is survived by her husband Sam, her half-sisters Vivian Rhodes Kinsel and Alta Rhodes Carter, and by several nieces and nephews, her son Donn and his wife Susan, and other relatives and close friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name to the Dane County Humane Society or the Friends of the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. Sam, You are in my thoughts during this difficult time and in the days ahead. I always enjoyed working with you at CUNA Mutual and was sad to read about Carol. May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories the two of you built in your life together. In Sympathy, Ann Baumgartner

I just read of Carol's death. While I never knew her, I am the daughter of Herb and Ruth Rhodes in Edinburg, IL. I remember Aunt Dorothy but not a whole lot about Uncle Allen. Most of the cousins I know are quite a bit older than me so I wish I could have known Carol. Since I was born in October of 1941, we could have had more of a relationship. She looks like such a fun loving person I know I would have liked her. We do still have a few cousins living here in Springfield and surrounding communities. My mom talked a lot about Carol's brothers and sisters but I never heard of Carol. I am sorry for your loss and, in a way, mine. You are all in my prayers. Lana Barnabo-Knaack feeling blessed September 8 at 8:23am · I want to declare yesterday... A day of hugs. I lost a friend, a client, and a 2nd mother yesterday... She enjoyed such simple pleasures... And getting her hair done every 2 weeks was her simple life. My hugs and hearing about my girls made her life full... Why God chose such a simple woman instead of me...when I was at the same ICU fighting for life as she was....hurt but yet loved!!!! Thank you God for my blessed life..... Carol Coe... I will miss you with all of my heart and soul... If everyone just gave big hug and squeezer to someone today would make life so easy <3 Lana

Just heard from a neighbor that Carol had passed. I had many pleasant visits with her about her continual special cats. She was proud of having enough love and kindness to love them. As she would say, "they need it too". This often took extra dedication and expense of which she never complained. I tragically lost a close friend at this time, so even though my partner saw the ambulance, it escaped me. My sympathy and thanks Carol for adopting those no one else would and all the visits.
