BELLAIRE, MICH. / BROOKLYN, WIS. - Audrey May Newberg, 87, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at her daughter’s home in Brooklyn, Wis. Audrey was born on May 5, 1927, in Monee, Ill., daughter of John and Irene (Boeckman) Janssen. She was a graduate of Silver Cross Hospital School of Nursing. Audrey married John C. Newberg on May 31, 1952, in Lockport, Ill. She worked as an R.N. in many hospitals in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Audrey was a member of the Grand Marais United Methodist Church and attended Bellaire Community United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother of three daughters; Nancy (Robert) Rodriguez of Bellaire, Mich., Sally (David) Cotey of Mesa, Ariz., and Judy (David) Schlack of Brooklyn, Wis. Audrey was a devoted grandmother to four grandchildren; Amanda Cotey of Chicago, Ill., John Schlack of Wheeling, Ill., Shannon Schlack of Madison, Wis., and Russell Rodriguez of Canton, Mich. She also came to know and love their significant others; Brian Foley (Amanda), Jeanne Maurer (John), and Russell’s fiancée, Danielle Wurth. Audrey is also survived by a brother, Robert Janssen of Tucson, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, John in 2009. Audrey loved to walk, read and spend time with her dog, Angel. After retirement, John and Audrey spent their summers in Grand Marais, Mich. To celebrate her 70th birthday, she went down Devils’ Slide and walked home along the lake shore. A prayer service will be held at the BELLAIRE COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 401 N Bridge St, Bellaire, Mich., at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, with Pastor Eric Falker officiating. A memorial service will be held at GRAND MARAIS METHODIST CHURCH, N14226 Lake Ave., Grand Marais, Mich., at 12 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, with Ian McDonald officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Burt Township. Visitation will be held at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library, 813 W. Wells St., Milwaukee, Wis., Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Judy, Dave, Shannon, John and all of your family. Tim and I would like to extend our sincerest condolences to you all in the loss of your family member. We have read so many wonderful things about her from Shannon in her love of her grandmother and we are so glad she was with you all and surrounded by the love of the wonderful Schlack family in her last days. I'm sorry to hear of Aunt Audrey's passing. Although I never got to know her well, she was always kind to me. She and Uncle Jack visited me when I was in Grand Marais trying to make a few repairs on our old family homestead.

I have great memories of your Mom (and Dad) as I was growing up. My heart and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time. I wish I could be there for you though this process but I will see you back in Madison. Thinking of you every day.

I remember attending Aunt Audrey and Uncle Jack's wedding when I was 9 years old. It was a very
happy occasion, my Dad, Philip, and Mother, Marjorie, and brother Rick attended. Over the years,
my wife, Susan, and I visited them in Grand Marais at their beach house. It was also nice to visit them
and share stories of our experiences together. I remember the bonfires that the Newberg clan, the Picel
clan and Mead clan all shared together, on the beach of the Big Lake, under the Northern Lights.
We sang old familiar songs, it was a happy time.
We will miss Aunt Audrey, our condolences to the family, and we are sorry that we cannot attend
the memorial services.
