Ethel Rieder

Rieder, Ethel M. MONONA / VERONA – Ethel M. Rieder, age 96, of Verona, formerly of Monona, passed away on Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, at her residence in Verona. She was born on Aug. 5, 1918, in Chippewa Falls, the daughter of Herbert and Clara (Webb) Swanson. She married George Metz, who died in 1943, then married John Rieder in 1947. Ethel graduated from Ladysmith High School. She worked as a payroll clerk for Durfee Brothers Roofing for 47 years until her retirement in 1988. Ethel enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, music and was an avid Bingo and card player. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Ethel is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Norder of Verona; grandchildren and Michael (Rachel) Norder of Viroqua, Michelle (Thomas) Pietrzak of Appleton; six great-grandchildren, Connor, Carley, Jacob, Jessie, Sydney and Charlie; sister, Norma Martt; brother, Edwin Swanson; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Metz; husband, John Rieder; son-in-law, Ronald Norder; brother, Herbert Swanson; sisters, Peggy Swanson and Lorraine (Russell) Stewart; and sister-in-law, Helen Swanson. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, with the Rev. Mary Pharmer presiding. Burial will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday.
