Obituary

Asleson, Thomas H. “Tom” STOUGHTON-Thomas H. "Tom" Asleson, age 77, passed away on Thursday Aug. 28, 2014 at Select Specialty Hospital, Madison. He was born on May 18, 1937, in Madison, the son of Adolph and Eleanor (Hamsun) Asleson. Shortly after Tom's birth the family moved to Stoughton. As a senior at Stoughton High School, he became one of the youngest Stoughton Police Officers and remained with them on weekends while attending college and even teaching. He graduated from Milton College and got his masters from Winona State. Teaching and coaching was his life. He started at Ridgeway, then onto Hazel Green, Tomah, and Deerfield and after retiring, continued teaching Drivers Ed at Stoughton and McFarland. He had joined CESA at its inception in 1962 and taught Drivers Ed for 52 years with great stories and memories. It is with sincere hope that every student knows how much "Mr. A" cared for them and later loved renewing their friendship when coming in contact with them. Tom is survived by his wife, Alice of Stoughton; step-children, Kim (Paul) Galvin of Villa Park, Ill., Kevin (Kim) Fix of Mishicot and Toni (Jeremy) Washa of McFarland. He was known as “Papa” to his eight grandchildren, Cade, Brennan, Bradyn, Katie, Ryne, Tatum, Dani and Harper. He is also survived by his brother, Dick (Jean); niece Kathy and nephews Steve, Mark, Paul, Scott and Kent. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Nancy; and sister, Susan. Funeral services will be held at COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1525 N. Van Buren Street, Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, with the Rev. Jerry Tews presiding. A visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship in his name will be established for a Driver’s Ed Scholarship. A special Thank You to: Stoughton Emergency Room, Ryan Ambulance Service, Meriter Intensive Care, Meriter Immediate Care and Select Specialty Hospital Staffs. Your compassion and care was always noticed and appreciated. "There are Angels among us." Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Family of Tom Asleson, I worked with Tom at Deerfield HS for several years until his retirement. He was a dedicated teacher and co-worker. Los of smiles and laughter over the years! Tom was also our loyal, trustworthy teacher union (Deerfield Education Association) president and representative for years and years. His reirement party at the Marriott Hotel in Middleton was one of the best ever! Additionally, I knew Tom as a patient drivers' eduation teacher at McFarland HS., where I work part-time after my retirement from Deerfield Schools. Just talked to him about 3 weeks ago while he was waiting for his drivers' ed. students and nothing seemed a miss. Tom was smiling as always! Blessings to the entire family! Tom was a great guy! Regards, Randi and Dave Thorson, McFarland
