Obituary
Neu, Frank G.
Madison-Frank G. Neu, age 78, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare, following a courageous battle with a long illness. He was born in Green Bay, on Oct. 19, 1935, with his twin brother, John A. Neu, the sons of Frank J. and Mary (Patterson) Neu. On August 11, 1956, he was united in marriage with Andrea (Gehm) Neu. Frank received degrees from Marquette University and Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. He was a graphic designer for over 40 years, working at Picard & Didier, Milwaukee, the West Bend Co., then in Madison with several agencies, and moved on to his own design studio, Art Directions, as well as “In Wild Gallery,” a wildlife and western art gallery. He worked part-time at the Highsmith Company in Fort Atkinson as the Art Director until he retired in 2000. Frank loved the outdoors…hunting, fishing and other competitive sports like golf and racquetball. He spent many years with his family and friends at their retreat, the Shay Lake cabin near Lakewood, Wis. As an artist, he enjoyed many years in his retirement woodcarving and exhibiting his “Wood in Water” wildlife carvings at galleries in Northern Wisconsin as well as Madison. Frank is survived by his loving wife, Andrea; two children, Patrick Michael (Sara) Neu, and Debra Ann (Sletten) Neu; grandchildren, Michelle (Sletten) Maland, Aubrie Nicole Sletten, Alex Neu and Adam Neu; siblings, John Neu, Robert (Donna) Neu and Mary Alyce (Walt) Radowski; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. A Funeral and Christian Burial Mass will be held at OUR LADY QUEEN OF PEACE, 401 S. Owen Dr., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014, with brunch to follow for family and friends. Interment will take place in Lakewood Cemetery later this summer. A Gathering will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution honoring Frank to the Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg, WI 53711, www.agracehospicecare.org. A special thank you to the Agrace HospiceCare staff, nurses and aides who assisted Frank through this last journey with compassion and concern for his comfort…they surely are earning their way to heaven! I met Frank almost 30 years ago when I first started work at Highsmith…we were in different work areas but we got to know each other in the break room….which led to going out for lunch occasionally with the guys or just the 2 of us. He introduced me to extra crispy french-fries which I continue to ask for all the time.
We talked about our interests in sports and hunting, his fishing, his interest in racquetball, his love for art & carving, his poker group, his place up north and our kids and grandkids. He talked a lot about his son Pat and daughter Debby and also Andrea and her solid work ethic, and his grandkids, and how proud he was of all of them. Frank retired a couple years ahead of me and when I retired, we golfed more frequently together and also went to sports and carving shows. And of course, many many more lunches. I think his favorite lunch place was Babes.
My fondest remembrance of Frank is that he was a real stand-up guy, a man’s man if you will. He was highly respected at work, and honest, generous, friendly, plus a family man, tried and true.
When my time is over, I look forward to meeting up with Frank again…and share more conversation and maybe some extra crispy french- fries.

My sincere condolences to the family of Frank G. Neu – It was not the Creator’s purpose for mankind to suffer (Romans 5:12). May the Creator give you peace through his promise to comfort us (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). I hope that you are consoled by Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).

It was great having some time together in the last several years, catching up and sharing old memories. One of my favorite memories that we just last fall laughed about - I worked with Frank early in our friendship as an artist, talking a lot about watercolor. Frank had not realized that he always painted his ducks flying the same way. One day I told him he should branch out and try painting his ducks flying in a different direction. He told me I needed to work on my tree stumps! My critique of his "ducks" didn't seem to threaten our friendship though, and I am grateful for that!
So long for now, my Friend. I'll see you on the other side of the lake!

My sincere sympathy to Andrea, Debbie, Pat, John and the whole Neu family for their loss. I was blessed and lucky to become neighbors with Frank and Andrea about 11 years ago. I enjoyed going for coffee, fishing, watching the Packers, Badgers and Tiger Woods with Frank. I have many fond memories of spending time with Frank including him and I tackling the lighting of our large evergreen tree between our condos. Frank truly carved the phrase “A Kind Great Guy”, because he truly was! We will all see him again soon……......Bob Mathews
