Welsh, Winifred Leigh “Win”
MADISON / BETHESDA, MD-Winifred Leigh “Win” Welsh, age 92, passed away on May 30, 2014, at Capitol Lakes Retirement Community in Madison. She was born on Sept. 14, 1921, in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Adelaide Wright and James Bernard Smith. Win married William Joseph Welsh on Oct. 20, 1950, in Washington, DC; they lived in Bethesda, Md. from 1952 to 2011. Win was a gracious woman who enjoyed playing the piano and organ. One of her great joys was spending time with her children and grandchild. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939 and the Washington School for Secretaries in 1941. In 1940, she was elected Honored Queen of Bethel 2, Order of Job’s Daughters in Washington, D.C. Over the years, she worked for the U.S. State Department, the National Rifle Association, National Naval Hospital, National Institutes of Health and Howard Hughes Medical Foundation. Win was an accomplished sharpshooter, stenographer, and model. Win is survived by her son, James Forrest (Kevin Lee) Welsh; granddaughter, Christine Leigh (David) Sohl; great-grandson, Liam Douglas Sohl; daughter-in-law, Maureen Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband William; son, Douglas Brian Welsh; and sister, Roberta Codding. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at CAPITOL LAKES RETIREMENT CENTER/TERRACES, 345 W. Main Street, Madison, in the Willow Common Room. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Capitol Lakes Foundation. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Aunt Winnie was a beautiful and gracious woman. My most memorable moment is hearing her play her organ in her home in Bethesda. She is home now with her family and beloved son Doug. I will miss her. Kathy
