Helen Jerred

Jerred, Helen M. MADISON – Helen M. Jerred, age 90, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Heritage Monona Nursing Home. A lifelong Madison resident, Helen was born on October 6, 1923, to Morris and Hattie Martinson. She and her three siblings grew up in the house their father built on East Washington Avenue. Helen graduated from East High School in 1941 and attended Logan University in St. Louis, Mo. She married and raised her son, Jeffrey, in another house her father built on Melrose Street, where she lived for over 60 years. A loving and devoted grandmother, sharp dresser, avid Badger and Packers fan, Helen enjoyed her family and travel, and treasured Christmas letters and correspondence from family and friends. She looked forward to updates from her nieces and nephews; Linda (Steve) Bartlett, Mark (Lorie) Gerry, Debra (Ward) Dieter, Noreen Martinson, Melanie (Dennis) Bonneau, Valla (Bill) Roth, Todd (Tammi Hauck) Jerred, Karen (Tom) Golden and the late Joffre (Ann) Jerred. Helen enjoyed shopping, especially buying beautiful clothes for her granddaughter, Julia. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage, although even she had to pretend to love eating lutefisk. Helen was known for her exquisite penmanship, which she accomplished ambidextrously and even upside down. She was also known for her love of animals, particularly dogs. Helen is survived by her son, Jeffrey (Yael Gen) Jerred, granddaughter, Julia Jerred; sister, Evelyn Gerry; and sister-in-law, Marie Jerred. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Lloyd (Florence) and Raymond (Harriet) Martinson. Funeral Services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014, with Pastor Sandra Schieble presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Memorials may be made to Heritage Monona Memory Care.
