Obituary
MADISON- Madeline (nee Carlson Hiller) Dornon, age 97, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2014, at UW-Hospital in Madison, following a very short illness. She was born on March 10, 1917, the daughter of Madeline (nee Winsor) and Frank Ivan Carlson. Mrs. Dornon’s early childhood years were spent in the Boston area and in 1923, the family moved to a farm on a lake in Northwood NH. She attended a one-room school for grades 1-8, graduating in six years at age 12. Madeline’s lifelong love of books and reading was cemented during those years on the farm with bookcases of books, closets full of magazines, and long evenings perusing all manner of literature. Following her father’s untimely death in 1929, she and her mother returned to the Boston area then later moved to Pawtucket, R.I., after her mother married William Hiller. Madeline attended business school at Bryant Statton and worked her way through Eastern Nazarene College by doing clerical work, graduating summa cum laude in 1941, with a BA in English literature. She married Clair Dornon in 1942, and they moved to Elyria, Ohio. Both Madeline and Clair were employed at NACA, the forerunner of NASA. Following WWII, she stayed home to raise her four children. Later, she taught English at Elyria High School for 20 years. Madeline was a consummate Elyria Pioneers fan, rarely missing a basketball or football game! She retired from teaching in 1982 and enjoyed many years of traveling, doing volunteer activities, and teaching ESL. Madeline moved to Wisconsin in 1982 to be near her adult children. In later years, she enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters. Her’s was a life well spent with family, friends, church activities, volunteer work, and pets. Madeline is survived by her children David (Nancy), Cathy and Paul; and her granddaughters, Mary Kate, Chrissy, Ann,and Betsy of Madison and Rose of Westlake Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and son, Jonathan. Arrangements are pending. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I taught with Madeline for years at Elyria High School. She was always a joy and a help to me as I started my career. Our Language Arts Department meetings were usually a rush of emotion as each member expressed herself; I remember her as always being the sensible , solid , and calm member of that department. For some reason I am able to picture her clearly, standing at the top of the stairs, second floor Washington Building, just ready to come down to the main hall.
I hope that each new day will bring you comfort and peace along with fond remembrances of her.

Mrs. Dornon was my English teacher at EHS. She encouraged my love of the written word to which I will always be grateful. She made class special with her enthusiasm and gentle ways. I will always remember her with a smile. May you find comfort in the days ahead knowing that she touched so many lives in such an awesome way. I feel so fortunate to have known her.

Cathy, although I do not need to tell you, your Mother was One of The Most Wonderful, Thoughtful and Compassionate Folks on Gods Green Earth. As an out-of control 9th grader. Mrs. D. asked after class if any of us (mostly south-siders) wanted to make some money. (figured it would wear us-out and allow her to teach, I assume) We arranged a time and place to meet, and the rest is History.Over the Years I raked Mrs. D's Leaves, Trimmed the Hedges, Fed the Dog, Cut the Grass, Painted Her House (yellow is still my favorite color) and Chauffeured her around on many occasions as her eye sight failed. (was paid like a Boss I must say) After several years of Military Service and a BS, I Phoned (Wisc.) Mrs. D's and let her know (I hope) the silent influence she had on my life. Her Quiet encouragement ( Her Trade mark) and Subtle Expectations were not wasted on me.She was never preachy or much to lecture but somehow her point always came-across in a Mrs. D kind of way. God I LOVED Her !
Tonight I heard a Toto song (Africa) and was reminded of a house painting in 1981 and more importantly, the Wonderful Educator who took a chance on befriending (and employing) a lost/poor/wrong-side-of-town kid who needed some Encouragement and Self-worth. Well Mrs D. Your Investment Paid-off. My only regret is that I had not heard that Toto song 4 months ago. I surly would have been there with you Mrs. D
