Paul S. Smith, Sr.

MADISON- Paul S. Smith Sr., age 82, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on April 5, 1931, in Trumansburg, N.Y., the son of late John Smith and Helen (Harding) Wood. Paul was the oldest of three siblings. He served in the U.S. Air Force and studied electronics between the years of 1949-1953. Paul worked as a Master Electrician and then became owner of Penn Electric in Madison during the 1960’s through the 1990’s. He married Joanne L. (Allan) Smith on July 28, 1967. Paul enjoyed many activities and hobbies throughout his life. He loved sports of all kinds and played fast pitch softball as a pitcher for many years, with many write ups for the “no hit” games he pitched in Madison newspapers. Hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking were among some of his favorite leisure time activities. Paul loved being outdoors and on the water. He was well known for helping out lifelong neighbors, friends and relatives with outdoor maintenance or any other project that he could lend a hand with. Paul is survived by his wife, Joanne Smith; his two siblings, Allyn Smith and Joan Woodard; and seven of his eight children, Paul Smith Jr., Louis Smith, Theresa Harp, Patricia Westphal, Sheri Karns, Tami Olson and Lisa Zwart; as well as, fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and also one son, Mark Smith. Memorial Services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 29, 2014.
