I co-taught with Bill for one year for typing classes at Memorial. I enjoyed Bill a lot. He was supportive, in fact, he was the only person I shared my separation/pending divorce with for some months....he cautioned me to be careful because someone in his family went thru it and it wasn't a process to help women. Bill seemed a little stiff at first, knew I was a strong advocate for students with disabilities, but otherwise didn't know me. He was able to take jokes when I told the class, and Bill, that we were going to practice "social skills". He said he was not one to change a lot... I told him no problem, it was my job to teach people with ' learning disability' issues. He laughed and went along. He greeted the class every morning in a sincere way, and they did him. The one student that shouldn't have been in the class, I asked to leave; this seemed to surprise Bill. But we agreed that this particular student was not appropriate for the class and was interfering with others learning. We were on the same page. He engaged the students with learning issues, encouraged them to stay on task, and made very clear the expectations. Those students really enjoyed his class and were, for the whole, very successful in learning basic computer/typing skills. I was shocked to learn of his passing...so sorry he didn't have a longer healthy retirement with his family.
My thoughts are with his family..
