Obituary
BROOKLYN – Maurice D. “Smitty” Smith, age 98, of Brooklyn, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at the Oregon Manor. He was born on September 15, 1915, in the Town of Brooklyn. Maurice was the son of Frank and Jessie (Bliven) Smith. He married Erma Wittenwyler on June 12, 1937. He attended Brooklyn High School. Maurice was a mechanic at Martinson Implement for many years as well as an employee for the Village of Brooklyn in the maintenance department for numerous years. He also served as Chief of the Brooklyn Area Fire Department. Maurice enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and building anything you could imagine. He especially enjoyed watching sports with his grandkids. Maurice is survived by his children, Dean (Dianne) Smith of Texas, Judy (Garry) Pass of Janesville and Shelley (Tom) Barry of Fitchburg; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and dear neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Erma in 2003; son, Craig in 1999; brother, Leslie; and sister, Hazel Perkins. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON OREGON FUNERAL HOME, 1150 Park St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, with the Rev. Gail Brown officiating. Burial will be at Jug Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, and also from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Sorry I couldn't be there. Didn't find out until day of the funeral and was in the north Georgia mountain then. Didn't know that Leslie had passed as well. Anyone with date and location of his death?
