Obituary
MADISON-Lee William Steward, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. He was born in Rockton, Ill., on Oct. 17, 1925, the son of Fay and Alta Steward. Lee married Virginia Harry on June 25, 1949, at Burke Lutheran Church. He attended Sunnyside grade school and graduated from East High School in Madison. Lee took over the family owned Sunnyside Grocery and ran it for many years. He managed Lee’s Shoes and later managed a Famous Footwear until his retirement. During his retirement he worked for Tim Lothe at Clock Works. Lee was an active member at Burke Lutheran Church for over 80 years. He loved to travel and dance. Lee and Virginia danced through 64 years of marriage. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends. Lee was a member of Monona Grove Optimist Club and Eastside Business Men’s Association. He most of all loved spending time with his family and friends.
Lee is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, David (Patty) Steward, Susan (Mike) Breszee, Sandy Kershner, and Dennis Steward; grandchildren, Shaun, David, Danny (Heather), Megan (Jess), Aimee (Craig), Jennifer (Colin), Angela (Matthew), Whitney (Kevin), Natalie (Chris), and Molly; 15 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Janet Strohmenger; sister-in-law, Kathy Harry; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fay and Alta Steward; sisters, Eunice Hoepker, Erma Lee, and Beulah Steward; and brothers-in-law, John Hoepker and Art Lee.
Funeral services will be held at BURKE LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5720 Portage Rd., Madison, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, with the Rev. Margo Martens presiding. Burial will be at Burke Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, and also at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Burke Lutheran Church Foundation or to Burke Lutheran Church Cemetery Association. Special thank you to the staff at Oakwood East and Agrace HospiceCare for their loving care they gave Lee and his family.

My sympathy to all of your family at this difficult time. Lee is up in the big house with Jim right now. Most likely at a Fish Fry . Gordy will be there also. I always enjoyed waiting on Lee at the ESC. He was such a kind and pleasant man. RIP Lee!! You will be missed.
