Modesta Marie Voss
January 26, 1920 - October 19, 2013
Obituary
Madison-Modesta “Moody” Voss, age 93, passed away peacefully at home with family at her side on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013.
She was born on Jan. 26, 1920 in Fennimore, to Orville and Rose Lampe. After high school she moved to Madison to attend Madison Business College and to pursue a career as a stenographer. On Oct. 7, 1944 she married Willard Voss and they had three children: Tom, Carol and Kathy.
Mom was born and raised on a farm and learned a work ethic and skills she would carry the rest of her life. She loved real estate and together Mom and Dad owned student properties that they personally maintained. She was the “Master” with a paint roller and was there to help her children, grandchildren and friends well into her 80’s. She would paint any color as long as it was white! She was also a tremendous cook, lovingly preparing and delivering food to her children and then to her grandchildren. She was well known for her banana bread and shredded potatoes, and her recipes have been passed far and wide.
As an avid sports fan, Mom didn’t miss many of her children’s or grandchildren’s games. She was also a season ticket holder for Badger Football for over 50 years, traveling to away games with the motor home group. She faithfully followed the Brewers and took a yearly trip to Miller Park. Above, all she loved to play cards, especially bridge and double deck euchre. She enjoyed her weekly Middleton bridge group and wintering in Florida gave her a chance to continue playing everyday with her Murry Hills friends. She was an avid golfer and card player at Lake Wisconsin Country Club.
Modesta is survived by her children and their families: Tom (Audrey) Voss with children Ben (Liz) and Jamie (Nick) Buri, Carol (Phill) Michalski with children Katie (Ryan) Rist, Beth, and Max, and Kathy (Tim) Goldsworthy with children Jennifer, Joe and Kevin. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Molly and William Voss, Matt, Megan and Anna Buri and Owen and Miles Rist. She is further survived by her sister Margaret Karpinsky. She was preceded in death by her husband Willy (1992); her parents; her brothers, George and Orville; and her sister, Rosemary.
We would like to thank Agrace Hospice, her longtime physician, Dr. Ann Schmidt, and most importantly her loving caretaker, Maria who together allowed Mom to remain in her home. We also want to thank her loyal family and friends who came to play cards with her. You truly were a bright spot in her day!
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 7450 University Ave., Middleton, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, with Monsignor Douglas Dushack presiding. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013 and also at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday.
Memorials may be made to Edgewood High School where a fund will be established, or to Agrace Hospice Care.
Mom, you taught us to take care of family and friends. We want to say: “Thank you, thank you,” “Love you, love you.”
