Obituary
MADISON-Kristina Gisela Ellerkamp died on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013. She was born in Madison on Aug. 5, 1977. A 1995 graduate of Madison East High School, Kristina went on to UW-Madison and completed degrees in Linguistics and Biochemistry. She was currently employed as a Microbiologist for the Wisconsin State Hygiene Lab. An avid reader, she enjoyed science fiction writing especially Orson Scott Card and Isaac Asimov. She loved a good cup of coffee and enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, biking, and kayaking. A wonderful sense of humor, her broad knowledge of subjects that allowed her to contribute to a conversation on nearly any topic and a strong work ethic are strengths that define Kristina. Kristina also loved music of all kinds and during her life, played the violin in a variety of orchestras as well as singing in the Madison Children’s Choir. Above all, she had a love of nature and animals. She adored her orange tabby cat with the catchy name, Cheddar Boy.
Kristina is survived by her parents, Gerhard and Peggy Ellerkamp; brother, Jason (Aleice); sisters, Caroline and Diana (Dan) and their newborn son, Nolan; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Forrest and Valera Grunert and Gerhard O. and Ellinor Ellerkamp; and her aunt, Gisela Harris-Ellerkamp.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Memories of writing together and cracking each other up, looking at the stars over Lake Monona and marveling at the universe, playing Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings in quartet form because it killed us on the Lorenzo's Oil soundtrack (she, unlike I, also knew it from Platoon), taking a sign language class together just because it was interesting, missing most of what my Algebra teacher said because I was busy reading the notes Kristina wrote me and composing something worthy to send back, talking about the sometimes dark times, being dragged to Pink Floyd's The Wall and Speed (an action movie!), being shocked because she actually enjoyed hearing my dad talk about the architectural history of windows in Chicago skyscrapers, constant joking and constant consideration for living with integrity -- she was someone I always looked up to and loved to be around like so many others did. She is in my heart forever.

I am so heartbroken by this news. Kristina and I met at Whole Foods in 2003 and worked together closely for 5+ years. We had so much fun together at work and developed a friendship outside those four walls. As time went by, we grew closer and a funny nickname evolved: Xtina. Such a brilliant woman and so inspirational. My thoughts go out to your family. I'm so very sorry for your loss of such a shining star.
