He was born on April 2, 1924, in Madison, to Frank and Winnabel Gratiot. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Gesme on June 28, 1943, in Salina, Kansas. Russ was a WWII veteran of the 10th Mtn. After serving in the military Russ spent a majority of his career operating a printing press for the Wisconsin State Chamber of Commerce. Later in life Russ worked for Woodman’s Market into his seventies until his retirement. Russ was a very dedicated and hardworking man who took pride in all of his endeavors. Russ had a deep love and devotion for the outdoors. He loved pheasant and duck hunting, and fishing with his beloved dog(s), Duke. His love for the outdoors was instilled by his father and Russ carried on the same appreciation to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed vacationing with family to their favorite places such as Devil’s Lake, Eagle River, and Upper Michigan. In the later years, he enjoyed being able to be outdoors, reading his newspapers, and keeping up his birdfeeders. Russ is survived by his children, Marc (Nancy) Gratiot and Tammie (Nick) Mannarino; grandchildren, Melissa (fiancé Kory) and Ashley Teela; and one sister-in-law, Jo Gesme, of Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews. I worked with Russ for a couple of years at the WSCC back in the 70's (and I went to the Oregon schools with his kids). I remember him as a friendly guy and industrious worker. Condolences to his family.

Tom and I became great friends with Russ. He was our customer first and evolved from there. We were fellow Fitchburg residents for a long time too. We will miss him very much. He would always come in to see us with a Lab in tow!! Rest in peace Russ. You are in the great hunting ground now. Tom and Linda Holmes.

I talked with Russ about his memories of hunting and fishing in Wisconsin and always enjoyed him. One of the memories he shared with me was the Armistice Day storm in 1940 and how he and Marv Larson borrowed Larson's father's car to go out duck hunting. The article appeared in the Capital Times in November, 2006. I very much enjoyed knowing Russ. Tim Eisele, Freelance Outdoor Writer, Madison
