Obituary

MADISON/EDGERTON-Martin R. Griffin Sr., age 96, of Madison and Edgerton, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013 in the hospital. He was born on March 26, 1917, in Kentucky, the son of Van and Mary Lou Griffin. Martin graduated from Darlington High School then joined the Army Air Force in 1939. He fought in WWII and was the most highly decorated war veteran in the country. Martin earned five Distinguished Flying Crosses, among numerous other awards. He flew 63 combat missions as an engineer gunner in a B-26 Marauder Bomber. Martin was stationed in many countries throughout the world and retired from the Air Force in 1960. After the service, he worked 15 years for Ohio Medical, now GE, retiring between 1989 and 1992. Martin married and had for children and was an exceptionally dedicated father, giving his entire self to both his family and his country. He is survived by his daughters, Julia (Roy) Manz and Carol Griffin; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Martin and Hubert; sister, Anna; brother, Hubert; and niece, Nancy. Memorial services will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Rd., Fitchburg, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. Burial will be held at Sunset Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Dad, you will be forever remembered and sorely missed.
