Bertha Strand

PORTAGE-Bertha L. Strand, age 88, of Portage, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Tivoli Nursing Home. She was born on Aug. 1, 1924, in Muskogee, Okla., the daughter of Will and Ollie (Lunsford) Sanders. Bertha married Harry M. 'Tex' Anderson and they were later divorced. She then married Lowell “Whitey” Strand. She lived in Chicago for many years where she owned and operated Big Bertha’s Lounge on Cicero Ave. for over 30 years. Bertha then moved to North Freedom, later to Henderson, Nev., and then returned to Portage to be near her family. She loved to dance, especially the Jitterbug and the Dipsy Doodle. Bertha enjoyed her ferrets and her dogs and bred many championship dogs over the years. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in North Freedom. Every year, Bertha participated in the Alzheimer’s Walk on the levee in Riverside Park in Portage. Bertha is survived by her daughter, Betty Jacobson; grandchildren, Sonja (Jim) Rice, Suzie (Tom) Grant, Marian (Dale Corcoran) Jacobson, Victor “Tuffy” Anderson, Jr., Erik (Staci Pflum) Jacobson, and Janice (Larry West) Daly; great-grandchildren, Amanda (Larry) Stout, David (Lily) Huffman, Clyde Jacobson, Kole Gavin, Aiden West, Casey John West, and Lauren West; great-great-grandchild, Isabella Huffman; sister, Cathlene Mosby; and niece, Patricia Blackard. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Carolyn Lee Rice; son, Victor Anderson; daughter-in-law, Nancy Anderson; son-in-law, Richard C. Jacobson; sisters, Hattie, Ruby Mae, and Betty Jean; brother, John; and brother-in-law, Jay Mosby. Funeral services will be held at CROSS POINT ASSEMBLY OF GOD, 2727 Co. Rd. CX, Portage, at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013, with the Rev. Randy Mantik presiding. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Friday.
