Obituary

MADISON-Ruth Annie Smith, age 89, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. She was born on March 21, 1924, in Rio, the daughter of Martin and Betsy (Hauge) Nordness. Ruth attended East High School in Madison. She worked for Ceramic Art Studio and still attended conventions until a few years ago. Ruth retired from the State of Wisconsin after 25 years working for UW Madison at the Memorial Union. She was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church. Ruth is survived by her son, Don (Traci) Smith; daughter, Janis Koch; three grandchildren, Jennifer Younk, Adam (Angela) Smith, and Andrew Smith; five great-grandchildren, Lucy, Sydney, Jax, Nolan, and Brody. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald C. Smith; six brothers; and three sisters. Funeral services will be held at ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2165 Linden Avenue, Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, with Pat Siegler presiding. Burial will immediately follow at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Wounded Warriors Project. A heartfelt thanks for a very special caregiver, Joane McCloskey. Ruth was a very loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. Her family and friends will truly miss her. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Don, Traci and family: Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you at this time. Although Ruth is now at peace, we know it is still so difficult to go through this. Ruth has a special place in my heart. I grew up with her and my Grandmother (her sister) often together. When I lost my Grandma years ago, Ruth helped fill that spot. My daughter grew to know and love her. She will be missed!
