Obituary

MIDDLETON-Albert R. Pahl, age 97, passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at St. Mary’s Nursing Home. He was born on October 17, 1915, in Arcadia, to August and Augusta (Zastrow) Pahl. He was the youngest of five children. Albert grew up loving the out-of-doors, hunting, fishing and trapping. He played football in high school and helped his father in the brickmaking business. After graduating from high school he attended and graduated from the UW . After college he joined his brother Pat at Pahl Tire Co. in Madison. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Army and became an Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Officer in the South Pacific. He was present at the signing of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay, and was part of Occupational Forces for several months. After the war he returned to the tire business with his brother. One day in 1946 he was making a sales call at Bowman Farm Dairy when he asked the receptionist, Ione Christensen, if she would like to go fishing. It was love at first sight, and several months later, they were married at the Little Brown Church in Iowa. They built their home in the Arboretum, and there they raised their two children Douglas and Marilyn. Albert loved the outdoors always having beautiful flower and prosperous vegetable gardens, fruit trees and a grape arbor. He raised honey bees , made wine and jelly and cracked his own hickory nuts. He loved deer hunting and only missed one season due to a surgery. He continued to work part time at the tire store until his was 93. He was never one to sit still. Albert was a very active member at Bethel Lutheran Church in Madison, and later at St. Luke’s in Middleton. He was also a long time member of the Madison Gyro Club and bowled in their league for many years. Albert is survived by his loving wife, Ione “Chris” of 65 years; his two children, Doug (Joan) and Marilyn (Marshall) Brinkman; four grandchildren, Eva (Dan Allen), Marta (Aris Gialamas) Doug Jr. (Kate) and Thomas Eddington. He is also survived by five great grandchildren, August and Maddox Allen and George, Candy and Petra Gialamas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Donald “Pat”, Adeline Hoffe, Edward and Alvin “Ole”. Funeral services will be held at ST. LUKE’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 7337 Hubbard Avenue, Middleton at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 with the Reverend Roger Eigenfeld presiding. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, November 12, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL & CREMATION CARE, 7435 University Ave., Middleton from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, November 12, 2012. Funeral services will be held at ST. LUKE’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 7337 Hubbard Avenue, Middleton at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 with the Reverend Roger Eigenfeld presiding.
