Obituary

Emeritus Professor David E. Schrieber (07/09/27) of the School of Business, UW-Madison, died after a full life on 09-29-2012 at St. Mary’s Care Center. He received his B.S. in Industrial Relations and Administration from Yale in 1949, his M.S. in Educational Guidance from UW-Madison in 1952, and his Ph.D in Labor Management from UW-Madison in 1956. From 1955-1964, he worked with the General Electric Company in Human Resource Management. In 1964, he joined the UW-Madison School of Business Extension (Management Institute/Executive Education) and rose to full Professor and was Director of the Human Resource Programs in the Management Institute until his retirement in 1994. At his retirement, he was cited as the 1991 recipient of the Extension Career Award given to honor an individual who sustained outstanding and significant programmatic contributions to the UW System extension function. David enjoyed both a national and an international reputation as a consummate educator who believed strongly in class participation and the sharing of learning experiences. One of his long-lasting publications, used nationally to prepare nursing home administrators, was entitled, “Administration of Nursing Home/Long Term Care Facility”. He was also actively involved in international education and spent five years in Indonesia helping to upgrade the teaching of management in six different Indonesian universities. He has also been on 15 assignments in 10 different countries helping small businesses and cooperatives converting from socialized to privatized economies. David was a gifted and enthusiastic singer of choral music and began his interest while at Yale. He continued that association after his graduation and has sung nearly 40 years with the University of Wisconsin Choral Union. In addition, he sang on multiple international tours with the Yale Alumni Chorus and also was a long-term member of the choir at First Congregational Church. He was also an accomplished grower of varieties of dahlias and famous for sharing their beauty with friends and strangers. His collection of tubers was donated recently to friends, neighbors, and to the Madison Dahlia Society. He leaves behind his life-long sweetheart and wife of 52 years, Janet (Wright) Schrieber, sister Mary Kwapil of Fairhope, AL, two daughters Peggy Schrieber (Ron Ipson) of Denver, CO, Karen Elizabeth Schrieber, grandchildren Jeremy Schrieber, Condro Lukitosari and Ndaru Kartikaningsih. In place of flowers, friends might want to make memorial contributions in his name to First Congregational Church Foundation, 1609 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53726. A Memorial Service will be held at First Congregational Church with the Reverend Eldonna Hazen officiating starting at 4pm on October 7 2012. Dave was a gem! We will miss him. I and my VOCA staff worked with him a number of times as we placed him in numerous overseas volunteer assignments---to some pretty exotic and remote locations. His knowledge and expertise played a major role in helping individuals, organizations and businesses---all of them in the developing world. And, we welcomed his visits to our Madison office---he usually brought a dahlia, or two.

I am sorry to hear that Dave has left this world & gone home to be with the Lord. I worked at the School of Business & we passed each other in the hallway & he always had a pleasant greeting. We shared stories of our flower gardens & he inspired me to keep working in mine & enjoying the beauty. He would be so kind as to bring me a flower or two. He will be greatly missed & I pray that we will meet again someday in God's flower garden. My sympathy to the family for your loss. Nancy Thompto

Dear Janet and family , I only met David once , in Madison back in 2004. However , I was very impressed , not only by his intellectual skills , but even more by his kindness and friendliness. David used to play tennis with my eldest daughter Patricia , when she was studying at UW. When she heard about David' s passing away , she was absolutely devastated. I hereby want to express my sincere condolances to Janet and het family. Heartily , Johan De Muynck Schilde , Belgium
