Obituary

MADISON/NEW BERLIN-Elray H. Evans, age 90, formerly of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at a New Berlin care center. He was born on Jan. 5, 1922, in Randolph, the son of Herbert and Margaret (Corte) Evans. Elray married Ione Schwartz on Feb. 23, 1946, in Denmark, and then moved to Madison. He served in the U.S. Navy, and was a veteran of World War II. Elray worked for Oscar Mayer Foods as a meat cutter for 45 years. He was a charter member of Eastside Evangelical Lutheran Church. Elray was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. As a lifetime bowler, he participated in many leagues, and founded a bowling league for seniors that he ran for more than 20 years at the Bowl-A-Vard in Madison. He was also a tropical fish enthusiast, having raised and bred many over the years. Elray is survived by his son, Bruce (Cheryl) Evans of New Berlin; and grandchildren, Jennifer Evans of Washington State and Brian Evans of Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ione in 2007. Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012, with the Rev. Michael Novotny presiding. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens with military honors being conducted. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastside Evangelical Lutheran Church.
