Kathryn J. Nelson

LODI-Kathryn Janet Nelson, age 100, died on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at the home of her daughter. She was born on June 19, 1911, in White Earth, North Dakota, to William and Mary Hannah. She grew up in Ross, N.D., attended teacher’s college and taught in the county schools near Ross. She married Walter Nelson on June 18, 1931. They later relocated to Wisconsin where they raised three daughters. She was a resident of De Forest from 1941 until recently moving to Lodi. She will be remembered by many in De Forest as the head cook at the De Forest Elementary School for over 20 years where she was famous for her cinnamon rolls. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in De Forest for almost 70 years and spent many years teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Shanahan of Madison, Alabama, and Kathleen Markgraf of Lodi; four grandchildren, Mary (Jack) Anderson, Anne (Dean) Bekken, Kristin (John) Ugrob, and Michael (Diane) Markgraf; 13 great-grandchildren, Jackson, Avery, Jordan and Bailey Anderson, Anthony, George, Kathryn, Daniel , Elizabeth, Eleanor and Brian Bekken; Jakob Ugrob and Mason Markgraf. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Wilbur, Robert, Arnold and Donald Hannah; her husband, Walter Nelson , an infant son and a daughter, Barbara Eggert. Funeral services will be held at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH, 220 S. Main Street, De Forest, at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 9, 2012 with the Pastor Jerry A. Olson presiding. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in Norway Grove Cemetery.
