Obituary
The Service for the Dead will be sung for Pelahija (Paula) Grygorenko, age 80, of Madison, Wisconsin, at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 29th, 2012, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 11 N. 7th St., Madison, with Father Michael Vanderhoef presiding. She died on Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Agrace HospiceCare in Madison. Mrs. Grygorenko was born on November 1, 1931, in the village of Ol’khovka, east of Kursk, Russia, near the Ukrainian border. She was the daughter of Melanija (née Holosov) and Myron Voroshylyn and the sister of Anna Voroshylyn, who all predeceased her. During World War II the Voroshylyn family was taken to Germany to do forced labor on a farm in the northern sector. After the war they were interned in the Lysenko Displaced Persons Camp in Hannover, Germany, where Mrs. Grygorenko met and married her husband of 60 years, Mychailo Grygorenko, who died in 2008. She, her husband and daughter, her parents, and her sister came to the United States on Memorial Day, 1951, sponsored as war refugees by the Methodist Church in Delavan. A second daughter was born in the U.S. The family came to Madison in 1952, where Mrs. Grygorenko worked for Red Dot Potato Chips (later Frito-Lay) and later ran her own tailoring business. She was a superb seamstress and handicrafter and an avid gardener. Mrs. Grygorenko was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Survivors include her two daughters, Maria Carlson and her husband Thomas E., of Lawrence, Kan., and Anna Vanderhoef and her husband, Richard L., of Cottage Grove; three grandchildren, Fr. R. Michael Vanderhoef and his wife, Patricia of Madison, Melanie Heinrich of Janesville, and Andrea Vanderhoef of Madison; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Bryce Heinrich. Visitation will be held at ASSUMPTION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH, 11 N. 7th Street, Madison, at 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday, March 29, 2012. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church or to CareWisconsin First, Inc., sent in care of the Gunderson East Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive.
