Obituary
OREGON- Born in North Dakota in 1911 and the eldest daughter of John and Josephine Weiler, Mary Jo Uphoff passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at Main Street Quarters, an assisted living home in Oregon, where she had been a resident for more than 4 years. The care and support she received from the staff there were greatly appreciated by her family. Mary Jo was Educational Director for the North Dakota Farmer’s Union and later worked as Youth Director for the Wisconsin Farmer’s Union, following her marriage to Walter Uphoff in 1938. She was a stalwart activist who met with Eleanor Roosevelt while attending a national youth congress in 1932 and participated on a 1930’s radio program with Margaret Mead. She later ran as a candidate for Congress in Wisconsin in 1948, the same year her husband ran for Governor of Wisconsin on the Socialist Party ticket. With her husband, Mary Jo Uphoff raised a family, helped to manage Fellowship Farm, traveled extensively and co-authored a number of books on parapsychology. She as also active in the Prospect Park Coop in Minneapolis and was clerk of the Boulder, Colo. Friends Meeting. A source of inspiration to her family and friends, she is survived by her four sons, Norman, Eugene, Charles and Walter who, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will miss her greatly. Memorial services will be held at the FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, 1704 Roberts Court, Madison, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. Contributions to the American Friends Service Committee or Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom can be made, in lieu of flowers, for anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory.
