Obituary

Arlyn F. Fuerst, age 69, passed away on Dec. 26, 2011, at Agrace HospiceCare, due to his condition resulting from CLL, which he lived with since 2000. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Arlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Fuerst and Martha Fuerst nee DeJonge. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Fuerst nee Wulff, three sons, Michael, Paul, and Steven, their wives Anna-Miria, Tamara, and Suzette, and nine grandchildren, Brett Hans, Isabelle, Emma, Camelia, Hillena, Tomas, Lukas, and Ida, as well as his brother, Dick Fuerst (Veronica), and his sister, Patricia Thomas (Mark) and their families. Arlyn was born on May 25, 1942, in Holdrege, Nebraska. He married Carolyn Wulff on June 13, 1965, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Canova, South Dakota. Both were raised in Midwestern, German-Lutheran farming communities, which greatly shaped their outlook on life, filled with warm-heartedness, openness, and values of family, a strong work ethic, and church piety. His passion for family life and communication led to the introduction of American Sign Language to his two deaf sons and the entire family as well. Arlyn received his Bachelor of Music degree in church music at Wartburg College in 1963, and his Master of Music degree in church music and organ from the University of Michigan in 1964. In 1971, he received a Lutheran World Federation scholarship and was granted a leave of absence from his position at Trinity Lutheran Church for further studies at the Musikhochschule in Luebeck, Germany and the University of Iowa. He taught as a presenter from 1974 until 1988 for the University of Wisconsin Music Extension Series. Arlyn is best known to the Madison community for his 43 year tenure as minister of music at Trinity Lutheran Church (ELCA), a position he enthusiastically filled from 1964 until 2006; he loved working with the dedicated volunteers of the music program. He organized and directed an annual Renaissance Festival for Advent and Christmas on the First Sunday of Advent for 25 years from 1977 until 2001. The Trinity choir toured Europe under his leadership in 1979, 1986, and 1996. He was featured in the Wisconsin State Journal as “Know your Madisonian” in 1999, and represented the city together with musicians from Trinity at the Madison Fair in Freiburg, Germany in 1994. Arlyn was grateful for the care he received from the doctors and nurses at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and from the caregivers of Agrace HospiceCare. He was thankful in particular for a fantastic summer that culminated in a family reunion in August of all the descendants of his parents, Fred and Martha Fuerst. Family and service of God in the Lutheran tradition were of utmost importance to him. He has touched many people with his life and work, and was moved to be reminded of this through the many cards, letters, and well-wishes he received during the last weeks of his life. Funeral services will be held at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1904 Winnebago Street, Madison, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, and at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. Cemetery: Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Agrace HospiceCare, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, and at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday. I have learned of Arlyn's passing with extreme sadness. I was in Trinity's choirs under his direction from the time I was 5 years old all the way through college. And my knowledge and appreciation of music, which so enriches my life, is to a very large measure because I had the privilege to study under Arlyn. I will further always be grateful that even after his retirement he played organ for my mother's funeral. But for as much as Arlyn loved and served the art form of music, he undoubtedly did all of it out of his deeper ministry to God in the Church. He beautified the House of God through his faith and piety as much as through his musical talents. Grant him rest eternal, Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. You, his family, are in my prayers as you mourn this great man.

Dear Pat and Family, We all are sad to hear of the death of your brother. We pray the Holy Spirit will comfort all of Arlyn's dear family and friends. From his obituary we easily see his faithfulness in Music to God and we are reminded of your faithfulness at Immanuel Lutheran. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. Love Ron and Sharon Lentzkow, Steve, Linda, Ellen and Mark

Carolyn and boys, My sympathy and prayers are with you at this time. I remember the trips to S.D. and meeting all of the first time, and then Carolyn the many visits we had at Lydia's when you would stop. I will always remember the Christmas concert we brought Lydia to and the evening spent with you and Arlyn. May Christ wrap you and your family in His loving arms. It has been a generation (children to grandchildren) since we were blessed to know Arlyn and all at Trinity. His life and work were signs of God's grace that we will always treasure. Unfortunately we cannot be there to hug Carolyn and so many others, but know that while Arlyn has gone on ahead, so many like us will keep all of you close in our hearts.
