Obituary

MONONA-Lloyd Charles Washburn, loving husband, father, grandad and great-granddad, age 88, of Monona, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011. He was born on March 21, 1923, in Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Charles and Lillian (Marean) Washburn. Lloyd was raised in Iowa and graduated from Guthrie Center High School. He served in the U. S Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on the USS Casson Bay. Subsequently, Lloyd was selected for officers training at Park College in Michigan, where he also played basketball. Then he attended the University of Michigan and was a proud member of the marching band. He went on to graduate from the University of Iowa with a degree in electrical engineering. On July 17, 1949, Lloyd was united in holy marriage to the former Lettie Smith of Liverpool, England, in Nashua, Iowa. They moved to Monona, where he was employed as an electrical engineer at Wisconsin Power and Light Co. for 47 years. Lloyd will be remembered as a quiet, humble man with great compassion, a wonderful sense of humor and an easy, hearty laugh. With his extraordinary mind, he fixed anything from hair dryers to cars, played a mean game of cards, and spent countless hours helping his children and grandchildren with their math problems. Lloyd was a competitive athlete whose children delighted in searching the newspaper for his name after a particularly good round of golf or bowling. Though he enjoyed many sports, he was best known for his love of golf which he passed on to his family. We are grateful that to the end, he was able to enjoy many rounds with his golf buddies, Bill Waite and Vince Capaul. Lloyd was a one-of-a-kind husband, father, granddad and father-in-law, who was always willing and able to do anything he could for others. Lloyd is survived by his loving and caring wife, Lettie, of 62 years; and four daughters, Deb (Tom) Wellman of McFarland and their children, Drew (Sarah) and Kyle Wellman and grandson, Jenner, Devon (Dennis) Christenson of McFarland and their children, Seton and Hunter, Dina (Clint) Christenson of Madison and their children, Cade and Cami Anderson, and Leslie (Jeff) Birrenkott of McFarland and their children, Teagan and Jase. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Lloyd Washburn; and sister, Helen Clark. Funeral services will be held at ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 4011 Major Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, with Mother Paula Harris presiding. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. “Life is short and we do not have too much time to gladen the hearts of those who travel the way with us. So be swift to love and haste to be kind and may the blessing of God be upon you and remain with you. Together always.” In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH, 4011 Major Ave., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, with Mother Paula Harris presiding.

I am saddened to hear of Lloyd's passing. I worked for him many years ago at WP&L. He was a kind and gentle man and I feel privileged to have had such a great boss! My heart goes out to his family. May you rest in peace, Lloyd.
